If Mel Gibson hadn't made this who would have?  I thought it was amazing.  5 starsies.

that said,  the quote in the begining  about a culture falling from within didn't seem to make much sense in terms of the village being conquered.    Maybe it applied to ....something else.

I liked all the weirdos in the city.  and the fat kid on top of the stairs.

I don't doubt it was some sort of anaolgy for jews, homosexuals or some other paleo con paranoid fixation, but it was still cool.

From what I got out of it, that quote about "civilization falling from within" applies to the Mayan civilization seen in the film. Of course, the Mayan civilization then reflects forward to the American civilization of today.

I finally got to see this one last night.  Great film, absolutely loved it.

I too am wondering about all the flap over gore.  It seemed rather tame in terms of explicit gross-out for gross-out sake.

In short, I was mesmerized.  This is the kind of movie I wish were coming out of Hollywood with more regularity.  But alas, like with the response to MASTER AND COMMANDER, I guess "the masses" would rather have pulp.

Professor Hathaway:  I noticed you stopped stuttering.
Bodie:      I've been giving myself shock treatments.
Professor Hathaway: Up the voltage.

This film was a pleasant surprise after reading poor reviews about it. The only part I didn't like to much was the big chase at the end, but then again it gives you lots to talk about.

ER

One of the best movies of this decade.
What does not kill me makes me stranger.

Watched it tonight on IFC !!

I think it is a Masterpiece.

I had seen this film before I responded here above, and have seen it a few times since, including last night.  I would call this an action movie, and I think it is more historically accurate than the politically correct crowd would like it to be, and, disliking MEL as an actor mostly (and perhaps as a person) this film is, in a word, STUNNINGAPOCALYPTO is a wonderful entertainment, misunderstood and under appreciated.  It's truly a great achievement.

I was surprised to see it listed on SPike Lee's favorite movies list but it makes sense when you think about it. there are definitely paralels to Do the Right Thing in terms of preserving a community from outsiders. not a pleasant topic of course
