The scrawny introspective Superman we've always wanted!

Apparently Jude Law has indeed signed to be the Man Of Steel in Superman Vs. Batman. Um, Superman is supposed to have muscles. And he's supposed to be American (well, he's not even an Earthling, but you know what I mean). Who would make a better Superman? How about The Rock, Jim Belushi, Bea Arthur...okay, I stopped being serious, but that's a really bad choice.  Christopher Reeves could probably still play the part, if it's set up that he fell off a kryptonite horse or something. Why is it that skinny little geeks are always rumored or up for superhero parts?

Jimbo Jones

The kid from Road Trip and The New Guy would make an excellent Thor. :)

Well, I suppose Law could build himself up a bit, but they'll probably just give him a padded suit. That was what they were going to do for Reeve originally, but he decided to build some muscles of his own. Still, who thought of Jude Law? I mean, he's a good actor with a good face, but I find it hard to believe that somebody thinking about actors for Superman just came up with Jude Law. That's even more bizarre than the talk about Nicholas Cage playing Superman a couple of years ago.

We associate muscles with strength..regardless of what the comics showed, if you think about it superman gained superstrength based on not muscles but that he was an alien and earth had that effect on him. I guess it's not necessarily a bad thing if he's gangly..or lightly toned. I just have a problem with all the VS movies. If they shelved the superman project, perhaps they're introducing him in a batman movie so they can see if he's marketable enough to have his own movie.

When did you stop being serious?  All three of the actors listed would be...poor choices.

Better a scrawny guy who can act than a big guy who can't.

I don't know that in this case it's really about associating muscles with strength. It's simply that Superman has big muscles. He's an established character. His creators cartoonists decided how he should look, and subsequent cartoonists have refined and updated his appearance. The role should almost be approached in the same way one would cast the part of an historical figure. There should be a resemblance.

Surely there are some capable actors around with the rugged good looks and muscular physique needed for the man of steel.

I could be wrong. Jude Law might surprise everyone. He's very good. But, as good an actor as he is, I just don't see him in the role of Superman, not just for the physique but for reasons of style as well. It's just not the type of character he's proven himself at.

I'm also dubious of Jude Law as Superman because too many casting choices these days are based on putting the current big names on the marquee, instead of picking the best actor for the part.

This touches on ths subject itself...I think that like most movies the lead is picked from a hat which has the names of Pop Culture Actors in it....hell I think Jean Hackman would be a better Superman....

WON'T SOMBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN?????

With Christopher Reeves as Lex Luthor?

AndyC

Actually, Christopher Reeve could be a very believable supervillain. Not Luthor, of course, but some sort of chairbound mastermind. I think he could be quite effective.

Then again, they'd probably decide to cast Ben Afleck or somebody, for marketability.
