Weird fantasy animated film

I saw this when I was very young, and only remember small snippets of it.  It was an animated film, probably from the 70s or 80s judging by what I recall of the look of the animation.

Two very young blonde children, a boy and a girl, are found by a pair of wolves and raised as their own.  There's a flood; the wolves are washed away.  The two children then go on a quest to find some sort of earth spirit or earth god; along the way they are stalked by a lava or fire monster.  When they find the earth spirit it divulges some sort of existential wisdom, I think.

Any ideas?

I know about this film and have been trying really hard to find the name. the earth god turns them into wolves in the end.

just a suggestion: whether this was anime or not, this sounds like the sort of thing people on a hayao miyazaki fan bulletin board might know.

That certainly looks like it could be the film, but the IMDb entry is short on details.  Were you able to find another page or book that linked in the "earth spirit" and other elements?

I tried for a while googling wolves; children; animated; so on etc. none of that worked. i went to several forums looking for some help and anyone who had any recollection of the movie. I eventually was given an answer by poster Quinn from the Movie Web site.
