Well, here's everybody's first taste of "Death Magnetic". IMO this video is stupid and I applaude anyone who can make it past the first 3 mins. I gave up, like I gave up Metallica a long time ago. Sound-wise, they seem to have devolved back to the Load-Re-Load sound, better than "St. Anger" of course, but it still leaves you wanting and we all know they can produce much better music.

Unfortunately Circus the video isnt' showing up but I just looked at on youtube (the song The Day That Never Comes and Syanide).  Sigh...this band needs to stop recording.  It sounds like someone threw ...And Justice For All and Load (of sh*t as I ad on to it) into a blender. Theres no appeal, nothing you can sing with or band your head to it just sucks.  More grindy nonsense from a once thrash band.  That and is it me or has James Hetfield simply become too melodic over the past 15 years?

As for St. Anger, the production on that record is awe inspiring but not in a good way.  Why does it sound like Lars's drums are being recording 80 miles away.  The band should just tour with their current library and call it a day.  Its not like rock radio is kicking them off their airwaves any time soon.

(It should be working now, it's a newer post of the video)

-My thoughts exactly, basically real "hardcore" Metallica fans haven't heard a good album in 20 years, mainstream followers and casual listeners haven't heard anything decent since the "Black" album and I'm sure Metallica fans would easily admit that. I've had people into Metallica get on my case about my opinions on the band, but would they seriously prefer to listen to this bland crap or hear something similar to Lightning/Master - I know what I'd rather hear.

Metallica started out as a thrash/speed metal band, to be "faster and heavier than anyone else". What happened? Just because times have changed, the musical landscape has changed doesn't mean that you have to totally re-invent your sound, does it? There's still other thrash bands going strong, who aren't alienating fans with a "modern approach" or feeling they have to prove anything.

Yes Metallica have proved their worth years ago, yes they can probably do what they want - but how are they able to do that? Because of the fans who like the music and buy the records, that's how! I remeber Lars Ulrich saying that "Limp Bizkit & Linkin Prak are our peers, we can learn alot from them, they're so talented" JESUS! I'm supposed to respect a guy like that? Can he actually respect himself? Metallica could blow 90% of bands of the past decade out of the water, yet they choose to drop down to their level? WTF?

I loved the bands first 4/5 albums don't get me wrong, but they just plain suck now. No Metallica fans should buy the new album at all, don't let them keep believeing that this new music/sound is any good - they're deluded enough.

I haven't heard that quote but it makes me want to panic.  If thats the case, perhaps we can look forward to rapping and a DJ table on the next Metallica album.  Can I just say neither ever belonged in rock n' roll and neither ever should.

Lars hits me as a real jackass.  Almost like the Gene Simmons of Metallica.  I was shocked the other day to find out Metallica has their own satellite radio station.  WTF?   I think the true fans are the ones who refuse to buy into the crap they have been calling "Metallica" for the past 15 years.  It makes me wonder if these "fans" bought Load first and later divulged into the older stuff.

Back when,  Metallica stood for fans who wore all black and had a metal attitude.  Granted we've all grown up along with our fashion senses, but why when I hear "Metallica Fan" now, I think of the jock idiots in high school who chastised the band all those years. Ironic?

I got a leaked CD of Death Magnetic over the weekend. I actually like it a lot.  And this is coming from a fan of 25 years.  Yes, Load, Re-Load and St. Anger were complete dog s**t.    But DM sounds like it could have come out between Justice and the Black Album. That's the honest truth from me.  I was expecting it to suck.  Rick Rubin is the man!

Death Magnetic kicks some serious ass.

The Day That Never Comes is actually the most downbeat track on it.
This last Thursday, the local rock station did a show hosted by Dave Grohl and they had the guys from Metallica in the studio and played the album. (commercials included)
I got to listen to most of it and it rocked!
It's ten times better than St. Anger and the Load albums.

It comes out this Friday and I'll be stopping at Best Buy to pick up a copy after work.

Musically, it's a very dull song, especially coming from a band that used to be so intense.  I know, they say, "Just becase metal is in our name doesn't mean we have to play it!"  However, it seems all this band does anymore is continue to derail their legacy because they know that their name alone will sell an album.  The sad thing is I actually enjoyed (not preferred, but enjoyed) Load and Reload, and I absolutely hated St. Anger.  I thought it was one of the worst hard rock albums I had heard in a while.  I thankfully haven't had to suffer through that tripe in a while.

As for this, I'll let a few more songs come out before I consider buying the album, or even borrowing it from a friend.

Damn, and I'm still p**sed about how lackluster ...And Justice for All was.  And even back in the heyday of Kill'em, Lightning, and Master, everyone I hung around at the time thought Lars was the weakest link, attitude-wise.

You know I have to admit, I've been hearing a few more tracks from the latest album and  it isn't all that bad.  Why exactly they lead the charge with The Day That Never Comes and Syanide I have no clue.  (That was all over youtube first) DM seems to be remniscant of ...And Justice For All and the production sounds tight.  Granted, I haven't found that "it" track though that I MUST have on my Ipod.  I will give the band props for putting aside the awful Load and Re-Load sound.  Not bad...not 100% classic...but not bad at all.

we got a few copies of this at my store, and when i looked at the track listing, i rolled my eyes so hard they nearly came out of my head. "unforgiven III"?! come on.

also, why are they releasing the album on a friday instead of on a tuesday? is this some sort of weak attempt to articulate their sense of individuality, to say "yeah, everyone else releases their album on tuesdays, but us? nah, we're gonna rock friday!"? it's like a bad this is spinal tap gag.

I think it may well be agreed across cultures, races, genders, religions, and in ever era and epoch of time and history that everyone hates Lars Ulrich.  Everyone.  Even Jesus.

But one thing I found when watching the Some Kind of Monster documentary is Lars was actually making the most sense by far out of everyone around him.  Kirk was just not being listened to in it which is par for the course of his career in Metallica.

Lars isn't a bad guy IMO, he just suffers from bad cases of verbal diarrhea most of the time.

Okay, I've heard the whole album. I'm still sticking with my opinions. The first 3 tracks sound exactly the same, I didn't know track one had finished until the "day that always bores" came on. "Cyanide" & "All Nightmare Long" are probably the only decent songs I think. The rest of it sounds awful, the drum sound is awful and overall Metallica seem like they're trying to be a watered down version of Slayer.

I still like it a whole lot after multiple listens.
