Cinescape talks about the a review at the New York Times panning the next Star Trek here. *

I am no longer a Trek fan because of ST:TNG, so I could care less either way, but it sounded like another turkey heading our way.

Any one for or against?

* I 'm not linking the actual article because y' need to sign up to the Times web site to do it.  While free, I didn't think it was worth it just for one review.

Ouch.
....Ouch being the point made by the collum.
....I've been "Treked out" ever since half way theough DS:9. How many plot ideas can they recycle? Corse, how many plot ideas can be redone in a new and offbeat way, and therefor break the cycle?
....And now, Sci-Fi ch. dumps Farscape, while "Fireflys" or some such lifts its head out of the sandbox.
....Yeah...i think i'll pass on this one.

I don't sound that impressed. And I AM a TNG fan!!!

THIS I COMMAND!

Gee, franchise slamming (I didn't even bother going to the link)...just switch the Trek for Wars and a few names I bet it could read the same.

Popcorn movies, that's all they are, popcorn movies.  Pop the brain in the glovebox and enjoy, if you can.

The only one I am looking forward to is the DVD Director's Edition of Star Trek 5 - restored/deleted scenes and a Shatner commentary.  It's gonna be priceless!

Accord to the fall preview issue of TV Guide, Firefly won't have any aliens or monsters, just drama in space.

Flangepart

Yeah, thats right. "Humans Only", like the Battletech universe.

This is how original "Firefly" is: there are two women in the main cast, and one is a hooker--excuse me, a "cosmic hooker," as the commercial proudly declares--and a piece of cargo--"the girl in the box!" Among the guys, there's the complete idiot who somehow flies like Neo Han Solo, and some other cliches so well-worn I've forgotten them.

I'm falling asleep already.

As John and Flangepart mentioned, there will be no aliens; in the future, Earth has been destroyed and humanity has been dispersed across the lawless galaxy (to all those thousands upon thousands of inhabitable worlds out there), forming all sorts of diverse cultures and societies that don't get along. The cast flies a delivery ship between worlds, naturally winding up in the middle of trouble every trip.

In other words, it's a space-western live-action version of "Futurama," but totally sexist and too cheap to make latex aliens. F*** that with a pointed stick. I'd rather watch a collection of the worst moments from a "Trek/Babylon 5" convention.

Firefly still sounds worth a shot.  It has to be better than Voyager , the nadir of all "future" sci-fi series.  And the "No aliens" thing sounds kind of refreshing.

Played by Jewel Staite if I'm not mistaken (I know she's in the cast, just not sure which character), who is extremely cute. That's enough to get me to check it out.

I didn't like one thing I read about it though; They said that the original pilot was 2 hours, but Fox wanted a 90 minute one so they could sell it overseas as a movie. Huh? A 2 hour TV movie comes out to about 90 minutes anyway after you chop out the commercials. Besides, odd times like this suck for repeats. A 2 hour pilot can be shown as a 2-parter, but what do you do with a 90 minute pilot? Nobody is going to play the second part as a 30 minute episode and it would take a huge amount of padding to make it fill a longer time slot.
