Just saw Ginger Snaps

Just watched this movie a little while ago on HBO. I liked it. I thought it handled the subject of werewolves fairly well, even if it did deviate from all the standard werewolf myths. Plus Katharine Isabelle was hot. :)

I did have a couple problems with it though. Spoilers ahead...

When Ginger is first attacked and they stumble into the house and her sister screams for their parents, where were they? Near the end, when the mother is driving the other daughter to the party to get her sister, she seems awfully calm about having found a dead body in the shed and planning for them to disappear. Plus the way she kept insisting that it was all her fault, like she knew something, had me thinking that she was going to make some big revelation, but it never came. Then it just ended. Did the other sister kill herself or cure herself?

I hated it. It was vile. Made in Canada, so it's expected. I totally agree with the ending. I expected the mother to reveal she was a werewolf or something. It was kind of funny when Ginger grew the fangs, giving her a Canuck accent and a lisp. I must admit, the film depicted Canada rather well; as the barren, desolate, boring land it is.

On the first one (the Mother's actions), I just assumed she lost it.  Went over the deep end, stepped off the train of sanity.  See ya.

On the ending, I don't think it really matters.  Brigitte just lost the most important thing in the world to her: her sister.  Worse, she killed Ginger herself.  Even if she lives, she's never going to be happy again.

Incidentally, I liked Ginger Snaps myself.  It was the best werewolf movie I'd seen in years.  (Of course, the other two were American Werewolf in Paris and Howling: New Moon Rising .)

I'm with J.R. on this one. This worthless piece of crap did nothing but agravate me(and probably most of the people who've seen it). I wish I'd just left it sitting on the rack.

Just read over at Dark Horizons' site that "Ginger Snaps 2" is soon to film, and will depicts the adventures of Brigitte, who's both dealing with her sister's death, and her newly developed case of lycanthropia(werewolvism).
Thos new one should be pretty exciting.

Obviously you didn't note the sluggish pacing of the first film.

Apologies for the thread necromancy :)

For me, it was Emily Perkins as Brigitte that made the movie more enjoyable.  I found her incredibly attractive in the role, and she carried her part well.

Always loved this movie, and the sequel as well (got a screener DVD), so here goes;

Where were the parents?  Out, I guess.  It wasn't a large plot point, it was just necessary for the Fitzgerald sisters to get back to an empty house.

Why was Pamela so calm?  Well, she was always portrayed as a dotty Pollyana, and there's a nice deleted scene on the Canadian Special Edition DVD that goes more in-depth here.  Basically, Pamela had dug up Trina's body (the girl that died in the kitchen), and gives Brigitte a quick talk about loving her no matter what, before virtually confessing to one of the police officers at the dance that SHE killed the girl.  Yeah, Pamela was a little off her rocker, and was willing to sacrifice everything for her daughters.

The sequel, "Ginger Snaps: Unleashed," should be out on DVD officially in mid-April.  It's a good film, IMHO, but it does leave some of the more clever analogies behind.  Gone is the menstruation-as-lycanthropy angle, although I still found the film very enjoyable.

The ending, though.  Oh, the ending was incredibly depressing, moreso because it wasn't really final, at least, not for Brigitte.  No real news on the pseudo-prequel "Ginger Snaps Back," but I'd actually like to see them revisit things where they leave off with "Unleashed."

Take it and run.

Cool premise, poor execution.  And a really dumb title.

The biggest problems were it was obvious the filmmakers weren't comfortable pacing action scenes, and it was also obvious they didn't really know how to end the story--the last 15 minutes or so seem really thrown together.

Blankman

very irritating movie. couldn't wait for it to end...

Brother Ragnarok

Good lordy, I can't believe all this negative reaction to such a kick-ass horror movie.  I suppose you'd rather have the Howling series keep going?  Snaps, while it has a silly name and bad box art, is at least fresh and inventive with the werewolf mythos.  The sequel is really good too, and the prequel, Ginger Snaps Back (yes, still a bad title), comes out in Canada in April.

Brother R

There are only two important things in life - monsters and hot chicks.

Rape is just cause for murdering.

This is a great movie.  I agree with Brother Ragnarok that it's very fresh and inventive - also it's extremely well acted by the two female leads and is a surprisingly feminist take on the werewolf legend.

Plus, come on, the climax in the house is freakin' SCARY.  Not to mention incredibly bloody.  I thought it was very cool.

And I like the title - it's original and intriguing, especially once you learn it's a horror movie.  Plus, you can take it literally too which is worth a laugh.
