I saw TROPIC THUNDER during its theatrical run and found it to be somewhat amusing, with 2 major flaws:  There weren't enough funny parts (about 1 decent laugh every 10 or 15 minutes) and it concentrated too much on action and not enough on humor in the second half.

Yesterday, I bought the unrated DVD (which is about 15 minutes longer than the theatrical cut), hoping it would include hilarious scenes of disgustion, over-the-top, low-brow humor that had to be cut from the theatrical version in order to preserve the "R" rating.  Unfortunately, this was not the case.  The extra 15 minutes just contains additional not-very-funny humor and makes the movie more drawn out and dull than the theatrical cut.  This one had a lot of potential (especially considering the interesting ensemble cast).  But the best parts are the ones you see in the trailers.  The rest is disappointing.

I agree, the theatrical cut is better.

However, I must say I like Tropic Thunder a lot.  It was a pleasant surprise that it concentrated more on the action (and the action is actually pretty good).  I think all */comedy moves should have the comedy as the secondary concern.  Horror/comedies should be horror movies first, etc.

Jack Black was the highlight of this movie, as was Downey Jr.  I quite like Ben Stiller but felt he didn't do as good a job on the acting front here.

Don't get too close, it's dark inside.

I didn't think that the additional footage really added that much to the movie but I also didn't really think that it detracted from it either. The theatrical cut is my preferred cut of the film but either way it's still a lot of fun to watch.

I have a very strong dislike of Tom Cruise, however, I felt his Les Grossman was hilarious, especially the dancing.

I feel the same way.

I am usually skeptical about the uncut or director's versions sadly most of the time I agree with the cuts.

My wife and I saw this in the theater and both enjoyed it (even though she does not like Ben Stiller).  Both Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr were hilarious.  The Booty Sweat guy was funny too.
