I'm just suggesting that if you want wider participation in a discussion about "Outland," a new thread might be the way to go. Otherwise, it'll be you, me, Chadzilla, maybe J.R., and if you're really lucky, one or two others.

"Outland" is a "C-movie" because B-movies often try, even if they fail. "Outland" doesn't even try--not even a little--in spite of its fat budget and talented cast. It depends on gore, special effects, and sci-fi/cop-drama trappings to compensate. If "Outland" wasn't a major studio release and was shot on the cheap, I wouldn't have thought so badly of it...and it probably would've had more effort put into the script.

Read Liz's review. She's much better at whaling on its sad lack of any substance, and does so in greater detail. I provided the link so I wouldn't have to repeat it verbatim.

Outland has an A-list star and crew, so I'd be inclined to think it's an A picture. However, it's a Western set in space, and that's deep into B territory. It's an in-between perhaps, an A-B. or an A- or B+. Not like Battlefield Earth. An A-list star, $50 million budget, but definitely a B.

Check the link to Liz's review.  She fairly tore it to pieces.  But again much of the poor story telling isn't anything different from what you see in lots of "A-movies".  Maybe I need to rethink my definitions.
