To any gamers out there... what, in your opinion, is the best first person shooter ever made, and why?

I've only owned one game of this type and that was because the description read like a bad movie on the box. The game was called Redneck Rampage and it was awful yet funny at the same time. The premise of the game is you are a burly redneck who's wife/sister/girlfriend/whatever kicks you out of your trailer until you recover the family's pet goat from the nuclear power plant which has some how turned cows, horses, deer, dogs, people, and about anything else you can think of into zombies. You got to go thru a series of areas using various weapons while picking up ammo, moonshine, and vehicles along the way. Feels more like a create your own bad movie zombie adventure than a FPS game.

Simpson was considered for the title role in The Terminator, but producers feared he was \"too nice\" to be taken seriously as a cold-blooded killer.
Isn\'t hindsight great.
A person is smart. Without a doubt...
Call of Duty 3.

Sure, lots of people out there love Call Of Duty 4 and 5. Both of which sucked compared to 3. (my opinion)
COD3 takes more skill to master.

Check out this video of the solo campaign.

The solo campaign in COD3 is considered its weakest point.
It's in the multiplayer where it really shines.

Huge variety of very cool weapons and grenades - half the fun is figuring out the best weapon to use in a certain situation. All sorts of different enemies, lots of different environments. Very good controls. You also have abilities like a cloak, infra red vision, ballistic shield, etc. Get to drive vehicles and the occasional mech. There are numerous strategies you can use to complete any given mission - stealth, frontal attack, using a vehicle, etc. The character you play as is fairly well developed and likable.
The world is changed by your example, not by your opinion.

UT2004 IMO is the best for multiplayer and multiplayer botgaming.
The original Half-Life is the best for single-player.

As far as I'm concerned, if you can't mod for it, it isn't worth playing. (And by "Mod", I mean build your own additions to the game, NOT cheat.)
Raw bacon is GREAT! It's like regular bacon, only faster, and it doesn't burn the roof of your mouth!

halflife 1 and 2 are untouchable as far as their single player goes.

I agree with the whole list. How about System Shock 2 and Deux Ex?

Forgive me for taking this thread as an opportunity to cheaply plug my mods for UT2004. If anyone plays it and wants some of the custom vehicles, weapons, combos, and mutators that I have made, let me know.

For shooter/RPGs, Deus Ex.

For pure shooters, the finest, for its time (for me) was the original Marathon.

Deus Ex...ahh, such a great concept, but so many flaws also...nevertheless, a very memorable game. There's no feeling like that when you know you're about to make a plot-changing descision.

Everything that made Deus Ex great was removed in the sequil. .

I didn't finish the first mission of DX2, and pitched it for the drek it is.
