The Neverending Story

I was shopping at the local neighborhood Target the other day (looking for He-Man figures) when I happened to glance over at the new DVD releases. Much to my surprise, I saw one called "Tales from the Neverending Story: The Beginning". I suspect that this is a direct-to-DVD sequal/spin-off of the Neverending Story, but its hard to tell from just the back of the DVD. Does anyone know anything more about this?

Was it a cartoon?  It could be a DVD release of the cartoon series based on THE NEVERENDING STORY that HBO has been playing for several years now.  I've never watched it, but apparently it's your regular half hour show.

That cartoon is God-awful. It's made in Canada, natch. "Atreyooo, how do we get oht of here, eh?".

As best I can gather from Amazon.com it's a live-action remake/reinterpretation of the original movie. And it apparently sucks hard, hence the direct to DVD release. So, has anyone actually seen this yet?

After watching the third movie I have looked looked at the subject DVD in the store, but then put it down - thus stepping back from the abyss.
