I just got through watching Aliens vs. Predators Requiem and I honestly couldn't tell what was going on through half of the movie as it was so dark.  The movie pretty much sucked though from what I could see.

That brings me to my question, what other movies have been made but are so ridiculously dark you can't tell what's going on through the majority of it.

Also if this topic has been already done, I'm sorry but I didn't find it.

You're not really gonna beat AVP:R

"Night Fright" (1967) with John Agar.  Murky as hell. And the sad thing is that the night scenes were shot during the day with a "night" filter. Add infinite dubs and muddied prints and...well, this is what you get.

Funny movie though.

The version of Prom Night that they show on TV is so dark I can't make out a lot of stuff.  Especially when a guy and a girl are in a van and the killer attacks - honestly couldn't tell what the heck was going on there.  Finally bought the DVD and it's much nicer and brighter.

The DVD release did help this film a lot, as you can actually see something in many scenes that were way too dark in the older VHS.  "Toxic Spawn" aka "Contamination" is another that fits this.  In the old VHS version you couldn't see the creature at all, while in the DVD release you can see it (and it looks pretty cool).

Ya know, I've heard a lot of people say AVP:R is way too dark.  It was dark in the theatres, but I didn't have trouble making anything out.  Is the DVD noticeably worse?

Well I was watching it on a tv during the day and seriously there were times where it was like pitch black on the screen for a good 10 sec or more.  Other times you could see things kinda glisten but I couldn't really tell for sure if it was an Alien or a Predator.

In Roger Ebert's review of Virus (the Jamie Lee Curtis movie), he was griping and griping about how dark it was.  I dunno, I've seen it on TV and have the DVD and I've never had any problems at all.

Most of those Larry Buchanan AIP remakes fits the bill at one point or another.I would like to add Steckler's Blood Shack

Escape From New York was pretty damn dark.
And when he shall die
Take him and cut him into little stars,
And he will make the face of heaven so fine
That all the world will be in love with night,
And pay no worship to the garish sun.

Joe the Destroyer

Spawn of the Slithis. There are several scenes in which you don't feel so much like you're watching the movie, but listening to it.  It seems whenever the Slithis (whatever the hell that's supposed to be) kills someone, you just see darkness, but you hear screaming, and eventually chewing and lip smacking.

Never saw it at the cinema but the DVD is horrendously dark.

I've seen black holes with more light.

I always have this problem with the last films from Peter Hyams. I'm talking about "The relic" and, specially, "End of days". You can barely make out what's going on.
Due to the horrifying nature of this film, no one will be admitted to the theatre.

The last two Harry Potter movies were very visually dark, and the next one looks worse.  But that's more of a washed-out darkness than an "I can't see what the hell is going on" darkness.  I understand the aesthetic they're going for, but I wish they remembered what color was.
