Does anyone else here smell a ripoff?  I haven't actually seen any episodes of Firefly, but I've seen plenty of trailers.  People cruising space on a big ship, and judging from the trailers, pretty much the same character types.  Especially the frozen girl...  I mean, I guess if you're going to rip something off, it may as well be what at least I see as the greatest and most imaginative science fiction series since Doctor Who went off the air, but still.
Maybe someone who's seen Firefly will set me straight.

Firefly is only the name of the ship, other than that it doesn't resemble a bug.  Girl in a box is an old science fiction archetype, it's been used before.  I've been watching it,  and Firefly is basically literal space cowboys.  Train heists, cattle rustlers, shindigs, plus all the shiny objects you'd expect to find in sci-fi.  The characters are the crew of a transport ship that flies around in a populated area of space looking for work.  It's nowhere near as weird as lexx.  Try an episode, it's actualy pretty entertaining.

Firefly is quite different from Lexx (viva l'difference...which adds to viewing options) and you might enjoy taking a peek at it. The thing with science-fiction, and just about any genre work, is that it tends to work in archtype/stereotype charactors. That's half the fun; seeing what you can do to vary the theme. And your audience likes knowing at least part of what they will be getting going in, like knowing you want to eat oriental food or pizza, and enjoying finding new good places to dine.

Remembering the stories about the very first Star Trek having been described in it's infancy as "Wagon Train In Space" it's been really fun to see that done literally with Firefly. I really enjoy the production design (especially the costumes...drool...fabulous convention potential)  But I am very much enjoying the crisp dialogue in english (and chinese?...forgive my ignorance), the charactor development and interaction...and I was hooked totally when the Nasty Evil Henchman got tossed/sucked through the engine intake in the first episode...

Have fun!

Which hasn't actually been shown yet. Probably a scene from the unaired pilot. In fact, except for one scene, I can't think of any in the previews that have been show on the show. The only one I've seen is the one where the pilot asks "Who's flying this thing? Oh right, that'd be me."

I like it, but it's not going to last.

Thanks for straightening that up for me, guys.  Sounds like a pretty cool show.  If my blasted college/work schedule gives me a chance, I'll check it out.
