True Grit (1969)

Seen the John Wayne film TRUE GRIT on TV the other night. Its a good western that had Dennis Hopper in it. I'm not sure if it was Hopper under all that hair, but if it was his only line was "do it again". Other than that he just laughed a few times. The title is good and the film reminds me of THE SEARCHERS, HONDO, BIG JAKE and every other John Wayne movie ever made, but that is ok. It is still a good movie with some nice scenery from California and Colorado. I think John Wayne is kinda the "identity" of the how we see the west and westerns. He is definately an Icon. His presence in a film changes everything.

True Grit also rules for having Kim Darby in it. She rocks face as an actress, and of course kicked ass as Lane's mom in Better Off Dead and Jason Bateman's lesbian professor in Teen Wolf Too

 True Grit was great for many reasons. (1)JW's hairpeace.(2)Glen Campbell got killed..dead..dead..dead.(3)Fill yer hands you son of a b***h.(4)JW finally won an oscar which I think he deserved for several other flicks as well!

"True Fat"....a perfect example of Mort Drucker's mastery of full body Caracature, as well as the old gang of Idiots writeing skill. I do wish Mad had not been bitten with the P.C. bug. Now, they go easier on the "Special intrest groups", unlike the old days, when Everone had to watch their backs! (Sigh)...oh Alfred E. Newman, how you've fallen....
Oh, btw. The Single Action Shooters Scociaty, for shooters who like competitive shooting with replicas of authentic cowboy style firearms,in costume and in character, has a True Grit event.
You sit on a wodden horse, and to start the  timer for the event, you have to yell "Fill your hand, you son of a b***h!". Watch it with a woman holding a Winchester and a Colt, and trying to not look silly! Thats a live ammo compition, btw!

Drat! Double drat! Gerry beat me to the punch in pointing out that is an almost unrecognizable Robert Duvall as "Lucky" Ned Pepper.
Also look for an uncredited appearance of Jay Silverheels (Tonto) as one of the condemned men slated to be hanged.
Great line: John Wayne as he charges Robert Duvall: "Fill your hand you son of a b***h." Just ROTFL
As for Glenn Campbell, he gives a new definition to wood in the film. Even my father, who never comments on how bad the acting is in a film, commented on how bad Campbell was in this one.

I didn't realize it was him until a couple of years ago, and I've watched the movie many times since I was a kid.

TRUE GRIT is a classic, as is Mad Magazine's TRUE FAT.

A couple of years ago, I bought the Mad Magazine collection on cd-rom. What a great investment! It has every issue, including the covers and even the "fold-ins" that you can actually fold by clicking on them! Plus interviews with some of the "usual gang of idiots."

What a find!
