What's the consensus on this one? It was one of my favorites when I was younger (of course, I was a certified Nintendo addict back then). Now I realize that it was a fairly dumb idea to make it into a movie, and that it blatantly rips off Buckaroo Banzai (!), but it's still nicely bizarre. Any film where Dennis Hopper, sporting a cornrow haircut, turns Mojo Nixon into a lizard-man while a slime-covered Bob Hoskins looks on is worth something in my book. If they only changed the title, they may have had a cult hit. Any thoughts?

I've never actually seen the entire thing.  Seems to me they took all the names from the video game and then made their own damn movie.  Probably would have been fine if Super Mario Bros. was a small niche game, but everybody had a copy.  It came packaged with the Nintendo system!  Seems to me you should have some sort of continuity between game and movie if you want to draw people into the theatres.

At least it had the under-used Samantha Mathis.

Small side note, I found a copy of the novelization of the movie, and gave it to a friend of mine on the stipulation that he actually read it.  He still hasn't.

Anybody else wondering why the Super Mario Bros. games are listed on IMDb?

50 years from now it might be an interesting film. In the what is this catagory.
