I recently managed to get a Video-CD copy of "Ringu", the original japanese of "The Ring", through methods too unethical to discuss here, and I wanted to know if any of you have been able to watch it. I did like it, but I had seen before the american version, and although I had enjoyed, I am afraid it ruined the fun of watching the original. The main differences I noticed were that ther original was slower-paced and its script was far more concise, and less muddled.

Get it if you can, it is worth it, but watch it BEFORE the US version.

I've seen the original, but not the remake.  It was okay, but not the modern classic so many seem to make it out to be.   The pacing is a little too glacier-like for my taste, and I'm not sure if the genuinely scary moments are worth sitting through the whole thing.

I thought it was really scary! i havent seen the remake but the japanese one was really good! i was worth sitting through!! but i suppose its a lot scarier if you dont really know whats going on so you kinda make things up.  i also saw it copied from dvd i didnt have to kill anyone to get it tho and it was kinda fuzzy and hard to read the subtitles (although i prefer subtitles to dubbing even if its hard to read).  the second time i saw it and it made more sense i didnt think it was as scary. but the first time i watched it with my roomate and were both big idiots and get really scared cos were too busy screaming and closing our eyes to see whats going on and we thought the video was visions of hell and we kept seeing things we thought were demons and ghosts but really it was just someones shiny hair.. damned fuzzy copy. but i heard there was a part 2 and 3!! im really curious to see what happens next!!

Haven't seen the Hollywood version yet but I have seen the original. Thought it was top notch. It is very slowly paced but this only builds to the ending which has one of the best special effects i have seen in a while. It was simple but it looked so well and freaky. The second one is pretty good too but the prequel that they made wasn't up to the standard of the original.

Bit unsure about the American version as I have heard mixed reviews about it. Plus the trailers I have seen seem to give huge chunks of the story away.

Gentlemen. You can't fight in here. This is the War Room!

I've only seen it once, long before the remake came out--I may have to give it a second look.  Don't get me wrong, the stuff that worked really worked, I'm just not sure it was worth the long trip to get there--which is a problem I have with a lot of the Japanese films.

Paquita, I've got copies of all of them (from Ebay) also... part 2 sounded good (the girl in the well was alive for almost 30 years... ) but then the story becomes very confusing... its not as good as the first one...

And as for part 3 (which is a prequal) the story explains as how and why things did happen... but the story moves very slow and becomes a "love story" more or less... not much does happen here as it seems that it was written for Japanese only (sorry I dont speak the language)

both moves arnt as good as the first one, and then I seen many places on the NET calling Ringu (the Ring) a Classic Horror film and I seem to agree here because I dont speak Japanese and do love this movie. I guess this is why the the others do seems to suck because once you make a "Classic" it hard to make another... :D

Paquita

DAmnit! is ebay the only place to get them? i hate ebay! i hate the internet! im a big tool loser with no credit cards or even a checking account or state ID so its not so easy for me to get stuff over the interweb! whatever happened to good ol FREE stuff n people that give you things for winkin at em or at least take cash money bling bling?! do you know when they were made?

>whatever happened to good ol FREE stuff n people that give you things for
>winkin at em

I'd be willing to give you some free stuff, but you'd have to do a little more than wink at me...

Lancer

Paquita, I dont have a checking account or credit cards...

I used money orders...

What?! You mean I only had to kidnap a japanese distributor (well, or check Ebay) to obtain a DVD copy of "Ringu"? I said "unethical methods" because I don't have yakuza contacts nor a Zone 1 DVD (bye, bye Ebay), so I asked a friend of mine if he could get me a DivX version. I promise next time I'll be a good boy and try the kidnapping & spanking first.

BTW, Ash, who did erase your post? It wasn't THAT gory...

I thought that Ringu was a drummer for The Beatles . . . (groan)

"Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me either. Just pretty much leave me the hell alone."

Hey Neville, have you got Region 2 DVD? Cos Ring is available here , but if you wait til the end of the month they'll be selling the whole trilogy for 25 squid!
