"Tonight, we will honor the greatest writers in America with a modest 9 by 12 certificate and a check for three thousand dollars...three thousand dollars? Stephen King makes more than that for writing boo on a cocktail napkin." - Jimmy Breslin

I read the headline, and couldn't stand to read more.  Those Westboro folks may call themselves Christians, but they understand nothing of the love of Christ.

"He who loveth not knoweth not God, for God is Love."

They will face a heavy reckoning on judgement day.
"I shall smite you in the nostrils with a rod of iron, and wax your spleen with Efferdent!!"

Rev. Powell

Legally (and I admit I haven't studied the case beyond the news reports), it seems quite correct.  Obnoxious as they, are Westboro is only exercising their rights of free speech---their right to say any disgusting, hateful thing they want to.  Suing them for exercising 1st Amendment rights is basically a frivolous lawsuit and the loser should be forced to pay the winner's legal fees.

Bill O'reilly offered to pay the fees. ugh, it pains me to say, way to go Bill. http://www.irishcentral.com/news/Bill-OReilly-helping-family-sue-church-for-picketing-fallen-Marines-funeral-89621957.html

What these people do is harassment. Plain and simple.  They are disgusting, hateful, vile individuals.

There's no worse feeling than that millisecond you're sure you are going to die after leaning your chair back a little too far~ ruminations

As a resident of Topeka, Kansas, I offer my city's apologies. Even the hate groups don't like this church group.

they simply are not Christians, pure and simple.  I am stunned by just how evil and hate-filled they are.  I've been a churchgoer my whole life, and I don't think I've ever met a single Christian - not even some of the most intolerant - who would countenance that kind of nasty, mean-spirited rhetoric.

I don't know whether to pray for them to see the light . . .  or for God to send down a lightning bolt!

I couldn't keep reading, it was making me sooo angry. One thing I worry is, and I hate to say it, is eventually someone will boil over and well hate breeds more hate.

I've met Christians with a number of similar beliefs, but none of them were so filled with hate and worked so hard at hurting people like the Westboro Church does.  I think that's the most important difference.

The world accepts your fair city's humble apologies.

A bit off topic, but did you see the Google/Topeka switch yesterday?

If you're an Andy Milligan fan there's no hope for you.

That's a very Topekal observation you make there.

I wonder what their flow chart looks like; their reasoning is so psychotic.

Homosexuals having sex ---> dead, straight U.S. Marine ---> God is punishing the USA for homosexuality by killing US troops in Iraq.

Yes.  You have it exactly right.  I think psychotic is the best summation of the logic used, yes.

Being a Gmail.com person, I couldn't help but see it, and everyone was talking about it and the news stations kept reporting it...just give us the damned super high-speed internet they are teasing us with!!!  I'd get the Google logo tattooed on my arm for free service!

Rev's got it correct.  Legality and protected rights aside, however, these people, quoted from their website below, are scuzz:

"Military funerals have become pagan orgies of idolatrous blasphemy, where they pray to the dunghill gods of Sodom and play taps to a fallen fool," states a press release posted on the church's website, announcing the rally at a memorial service for Lance Cpl. Justin Wilson. At the bottom of the press release are printed the words "Thank God for IEDs," referring to the roadside bombs that have killed thousands of troops in both wars."

As Calvin once said, "It's hard to be religious when some people are never incinerated by lightning bolts!"
