My main thought: When deciding what to name your baby, make sure the name has a special meaning to you. At the same time, it can still be unique, but please don't pick a cute name simply because it's cute.  And for the love of all that is beautiful and uplifting, don't name your baby "Cullen" because you're lusting after Robert Pattinson.

I don't care one way or another about the Twilight series, but I would be so furious with my parents if they named me Cullen because they have a passing moment of affection for a fictional character. However, if they genuinely thought he was a good and inspiring person and they wanted to inspire me to have those same values, I would be a lot less angry.


By the way, I realize the article did not go into pretty much everything I covered here, but it got me thinking about related subjects.

My wife loves the idiotic Twilight series but there is no way in hell I'd let her name any our kids after it.  Honestly though, I'm more concerned with people getting way too obscure with their kid's name.  Some I've heard recently make me think certain people really want their kids to get their @ss kiced on a daily basis at school.

My parents named me after the inspiring star of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.  It could be worse; I could have been named "Atticus."


I have a boyhood chum named "Cullen."  I didn't know that was a character in TWILIGHT; I'll have to ask him how he feels about that next time I talk to him.

Not every boy named Cullen was named after the vampire in "The Twilight" series. My mother's father was named Cullen, and he's been dead for almost forty years. So, that's long before the books or films.

As for my first name, I'd like to see it make a comeback, as it hasn't been popular since the 1890's. Though, looking at it, or some variation of it, it does seem to be more popular in the south and west than in the north or east.

That is true, but I'm annoyed when people name their children after characters in books they will most likely forget in 5 years. However, if the name Cullen is meaningful to the parents I'm fine with it.

If I ever ever grow up, and have kids, I'm gonna see if I can give my daughter the middle name of Elvira.
I suggested this to my girlfriend.

I was almost named after my dad's best friend and my godfather - Buck.

Middle names seem to be a good way to sneak an unusual name in: after all, your middle name does not have to be revealed unless you want to!

We did that (we thought) with our daughter's middle name...turns out she thinks it is far 'cooler' than her first name (there's a relief!) and she has actually been using her middle name by preference for some time now. But at least she has/had the option of keeping it fairly private, had she wanted to.

My middle name starts with a T which stands for Thomas, after my Dad. To Star Trek fans who are my friends, the T stands for Tiberius and to some people, the T stands for Trouble. 

If I ever got married and my wife gave birth to a daughter, that child would be named Diana Frances and she would know who she was named for and why.

Having a very common name I was not interested in giving my kids one. Their names aren't weird but they don't have anyone else in school with their names either.

Oh, I named my youngest after a character in a Stephen R Donaldson book...     Dont think he will be running into too many people with same name.
