To me, Corman = great producer, important figure, but just not very good behind the camera.

Obviously I disagree. Corman was actually I feel a very talented movie director who obviously was mostly limited by budgets and trying to get things done on the cheap. Still he did direct some awfully good low budget films such as A BUCKET OF BLOOD, THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH, THE TOMB OF LIGEIA, X - THE MAN WITH THE X-RAY EYES, TALES OF TERROR, THE PREMATURE BURIAL, THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM, HOUSE OF USHER and even more. Heck I even think highly of THE UNDEAD. Not to say he didn't do some bad movies but he did an awful lot of goodies too IMO.

I nominated him because I thought he would be nice and controversial, rather than somebody everyone either loved or hated.  The movies you mention are good ones, but I remember the pain he caused me with THE TERROR, CREATURE FROM THE HAUNTED SEA, SWAMP WOMEN, THE WASP WOMAN, etc. more.
