Found this guy in my yard yesterday, as I was hitching up my boat, the Water Turkey, to go to the lake.

He's a banded watersnake, a common variety that is often mistaken for the poisonous cottonmouth.

oh man we see those up by the pond and are always terrified of them.  do they bite?

They are not venomous, but will lay a pretty good chomp on you in self defense if you're not careful trying to catch them.

Funny you should mention that.

When I first saw your photo I thought "HOLY JUMPIN' CHRISTMAS! DOES INDIANA REALIZE HE'S HOLDING A COTTONMOUTH - BY THE TAIL?!?"

:bouncegiggle:

Word to the wise: it's best not to hold a poisonous snake if that situation can be avoided, and most particularly not by the tail.
If you're an Andy Milligan fan there's no hope for you.
