I saw the trailer for this.  It seems like they  took out the "intelligent" aspects in favor of shock and schlock.  I was excited in the original about the "switching" of the families.  The "normal" folks turn out more screwy than the freaks in many ways.  I am wondering if the new version holds true in this or if it will just be a slasher film.  Its not my genre, so I haven't really read up on the remake.
Nathan Shumate has a nice review of the original on his site:

I don't think I want to see this. Plus, I still haven't seen the original yet, but I know that Michael Berryman is a pretty good actor, even though he's almost always cast in something just because of his looks.

I'm 110% psyched about the Hills Have Eyes.  I caught the original the night before graduating High School on cable, and I've been a fan ever since.  Normally I would look down on a remake, but it is being directed by Alexandre Aja the same director as one of my absolute favorite horror films in a long time - Haute Tension.

I'll be there opening night with a smile on my face.

A bald man named Savalas visited me last night in a dream.  I think it was a Telly vision.

That's why I don't think I want to see it. 'Haute Tension' was amazing, but I thought the ending could have been much different and better. I actually p**sed me off.

Saw the remake recently.  I have never seen the original but I have a feeling that if I did it would be 100% different.  I believe the entire movie was funded by the ASPCA.  At the end I expected them to have someone show up with an abandoned german shepherd on their lap and say "Do you want to avoid being eaten by mutant troglodites? Adopt a German Shepherd today".  The Beast rocks, gotta give respect to a dog that has a body count of about 3.5 (I give half credit for assists) cannibals.
When I saw the trailers I had no interest as I figured it was a painful, boring, "tied up and tortured" type film which only has one dimension (I hate those, I'm just not sadistic/masochistic enough to enjoy them).  Of course the film is saved by the fact that the normals are never truly captured and despite all of the gory picks/axes/ and other random weapons pretty much all of the deaths of the normals are technology based (gasoline fire bombs, and guns).  Also interesting and perhaps more realistic nuance that not all the mutants are killers and it is only about 5-6 of the men operate as a kind of hunting party.  The whole "do you want to play with us" scene is nothing like what the trailer innotates as this really is just some random little mutant girl who doesn't know any better asking the guy this question honestly.  On the normal side the movie was saved by the fact that the really annoying aspects of the normals (bickering, pettiness, etc.) gets mopped up quickly when the mutants start killing them off starting with the most annoying first.   Definitely appreciate this movie differently being a father, some aspects are totaly fictional (no little baby is that quiet when being dragged around in the heat by a mutant) other aspects (the dude will not stop trying to save the baby) are realistic.
The only difference between zombies and toddlers is one is cuter than the other.

I thought it was pretty good.  The mutants were quite freaky and interesting, and it generated a decent amount of tension as the normal guy investigated their town.  The attack scenes were rather well done too, and I seem to remember the characters being somewhat likable.  Nothing to set the world on fire, but definitely worth a watch.

I really enjoyed the remake of the second movie, I thought it had excellent suspense and tension.  But I seem to be one of about 8 people who didn't think it was horrible.   :teddyr:

I enjoyed the remake very much.  But the SEQUEL to the remake is positively dreadful.
