From what I've heard he was a kind of strange guy.  Not just by the characters he played.  But he was instantly recognizable and had his own style.  I always thought he should have been in Network as the "Mad prophet of the airwaves", not Peter Finch.  His manic, almost hyper delivery would have been perfect for that role.

He was one of my favorite actors in the 70's and 80's. He was great in Innerspace. R.I.P. Mr. McCarthy.
