Since we've voiced our opinions on the Friday the 13th franchise, I'm interested to know your views on the Elm Street series.

My list goes like this:

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) 4.5/5:An absolute classic. No question about it. Everything from the acting down to the SFX is awesome.

Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare 4.3/5: Holy crap, I've never seen such a fun movie since The Toxic Avenger. I don't give a crap what the "critics" say, this film is awesome.

Dream Warriors 4.1/5: This one is definitely deserving of being one of the best in the series.

Freddy's Revenge 4/5: An unfairly underrated gem. Sure, it has it's share of flaws...but what movie isn't flawed? Ultimately deserves better credit.

The Dream Child   3.3/5: Just okay. The fact that it's a bit darker than the preceding film makes it more enjoyable.

The Dream Master  3/5: Overrated. FX is pretty good but the rest kinda sucks. Freddy's one-liners don't help either.

(*Note: I did not include New Nightmre or Freddy vs Jason because I feel that they are their own films.)

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) 4.8/5: Awesome

Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare 2.5/5: didn't care for it

Dream Warriors 3.8/5: enjoyed it for it's ripe cheesiness and wacky money lines ("the bastard son of a hundred maniacs")

Freddy's Revenge N/A: never saw it

The Dream Child  N/A never saw it

The Dream Master  N/A: never saw it

A Nightmare on Elm Street was one of the first horror movies I saw (and fell in love with) when I was little... REALLY little, my mom got a note from my preschool teachers because I told them I wanted to marry Freddy Krueger and Bon Jovi.  Not completely understanding some of the darker context of the story/character, I had a lot of sympathy for Freddy and kind of developed a weird crush on him.  So basically, my opinion doesn't count because its distorted by fond memories .

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984): 5/5 - To me, the most scary overall.

Freddy's Revenge: 4/5 - The second scariest, but I also thought it was a lot of fun!  When I hadn't seen it for many years, I somehow remembered a scene with Freddy's fingers turning into hot dogs, but I guess it never happened.

Dream Warriors: 5/5 - My favorite!  I know I said the first one is the scariest, but the part where Freddy's skeleton throws Dr. Gordon into the grave and then does that really super evil laugh is probably one if the scariest things I've ever heard.  It still gives chills.  And the Dokken video is awesome.

The Dream Master: 3.5/5 - No matter how many times I see them, I always confuse the Dream Master and the Dream Child.  I think this one has some of the best deaths!  But the whole power transfer thing is kind of dumb.

The Dream Child: 3/5  - It's OK.. I don't like the kid.  I like it but it's probably my least favorite.

Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare 4/5 - This one is really fun!  Not really scary, and the characters are kind of lame, but it's a good comedy!  And Alice Cooper is in it! The 3D sucks though.. well from what I was able to see, maybe I'm 3D blind.

You're right, New Nightmare and Freddy vs. Jason don't count.

I love the original A Nightmare on Elm Street but after that, hated the rest of them. I can't even speak about the final film in the series however because I avoided it so far because of all the sequels which had came out before it. I did watch Freddy Vs Jason and was not impressed with it either.

Note, these ratings may well change if I watched the movies again. It has been a while since last I saw them.

Nightmare on Elm Street (1984): enjoyed it, definitely has some great scares but I've always felt it was slightly overrated. Still the whole bit with not sleeping has its impact. *** out of *****

Nightmare 2: Freddy's Revenge - I remember there being some good scares here and there and some decent, unexpected surprises too. Disappointing when compared to the original film though but I'd give it **1/2 out of *****

Nightmare 3: Dream Warriors - my favourite! Definitely the film in the series I love best. A bunch of kids tangling with Freddy yet it's surprisingly entertaining, much moreso than I initially expected. ***1/2 out of *****

Nightmare 4: Dream Master - like 2, I thought it had its moments. Recall it being slightly more fun but less scary than the previous films. **1/2 out of *****

Nightmare 5: Dream Child: Series was getting pretty bad by this point, descending into outright comedy. Still it does have some good, creepy moments as I recall. ** out of *****

Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare: just complete comedy by this point. Definitely the most over the top film in some ways but also the most disappointing IMO. *1/2 out of *****

New Nightmare: great film. As others said, not truly part of the series though. But still terrific with great scares *** out of ***** Almost as good as the first film IMO.

Freddy vs. Jason: I hated this. It was just bad and way too over the top. Didn't care for it at all. * out of *****

Haven't seen the remake.

I loved the original Nightmare On Elm Street - totally classic slasher with some great scares and really fun characters.  As far as the rest, I'm afraid I never made it to the end of any of them.  Just the same thing over and over, except not nearly as good.  I actually made a concerted effort to watch them again, thinking maybe I had judged them unfairly the first time, but no - I just don't care for them at all.

#7
The original is a classic.  I didn't like any of the sequels (although, I thought NEW NIGHTMARE was an interesting misfire).  I didn't see the remake.

#1 was a good old fashioned terror movie.

#2 was a bit discombobulated but overall had some good scenes

# 3 was a masterpiece, it should have ended there.

#4 I've openly addressed my hatred for in the past in an epic review.  They took the scary out of Freddy and destroyed the credibility of the film.  The acting aside Englund was by far some of the worst I've ever seen.

#5 actually I thought got back on track where 3 left off. probably second to #3, New Nightmare and #1

#6 don't remember much about it other than the feeling of it being insanely weak.

#7  New Nightmare was by far a really interesting concept for a film but without Englund behind the mask, I was kind of bored with Freddy.  Overall a fun watch.

Freddy Vs Jason wasn't bad but there was by far too much Jason

The remake doesn't exist and never will in my brain.

So by ranking
#3, #1, New Nightmare, #5, F Vs J, #2, #6, #4

Robert Englund made each one magical in some sort for me.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) 5/5: A near perfect horror movie!

Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare .5/5: I absolutely hate this movie except the video game death, which is hilarious.

Dream Warriors 3.5/5: Awesome effects, Freddy started getting "funny", which isn't bad. Still prefer some of the others though.

Freddy's Revenge ??/5: This movie will forever be unratable to me, I don't really like it all that much, however it is the second scariest. I am not homophobic, but there is something strange about the homoeroticism in this film...can't quite say. The last 10 minutes are of course, epic.

The Dream Child 2.5/5- Cheesy as all hell, but still watchable. Has some of the funnier, over-the-top deaths in it (AND SUPER FREDDY!).

The Dream Master 3/5: Freddy is officially a pop culture figure by now. This is the most "80's" out of them all, so it is more of a "teen horror" film. For this reason it holds a different place from the others, much like Freddy's Revenge. Holds my second favorite death in the series (the turning into a cockroach one with the fitness teen girl)

New Nightmare 3.5/5- Believe it or not, my second favorite. This is a solid horror film that takes a particiularly dumb, overused premise and pulls it off well. Also does a good job of paying homage to all the older films. Freddy's new look with the trench coat and metallic claw was a nice touch as well.
