The IMDb has a wonderful poll today entitled "Which word do you associate the most with straight-to-video schlock?" giving the choices:
 Deadly
 Deception
 Midnight
 Obsession
 Force
 Cyber
 Fatal
 Passion
 Puppet
 Clone
 Delta
 _ _ _ _ _ -osaur
 Other

Once again the IMDb proves to be the greatest site on the internet, and I suggest everyone go and vote, but I'm also curious to hear what you think as well. For me, "cyber" screams out crap in a box, but I also lean towards any movie with a date in the title (ex. 1990 The Bronx Wars, but excluding 2001 A Space Odyssey), or any movie featuring the name of an animal in the title (Rats: The Night of Terror, Legion of Fire: Killer Ants!). What do you think? What titles ooze with the thought of "direct-to-video?"

Deadly Deception (you know, I think this IS a movie title)
Midnight Obsession (same)
CyberForce (got Albert Pyun all over it)
Passion Puppet (whoa!)
Fatal Passion, Fatal Obsession, Fatal Force, Fatal Deception.
Puppet Clone Force
CyberDeltaosaur (starring Chuck Norris)

obsession.  It just screams Shannon Tweed.  Chadzilla mentioned Chuck Norris, whenever I give my last name, which is also Norris, I say Norris as in Chuck.

Deena "no relation to chuck" Norris

Yeah, "passion, obsession, sexual," are all pretty much instant Shannon Tweed title words to me too.

Deej

"Heat". Add that word to the words on the lit and see how many acyual titles you come up with. Examples...Red Heat...Dead Heat...and of course Heat

Everyone has potentially fatal flaws, but yours involve a love of soldiers' wives, an insatiable thirst for whiskey, and the seven weak points in your left ventricle.

How about these:

- Final

- Mission

In fact, the great Cirion H. Santiago directed a movie called FINAL MISSION.

Todd R.

I meant "Cirio."

"Cirion" sounds like something from BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. Maybe a Cylon and Ovion crossbreed...

Squishy

Erotic.
Atomic.
Invisible.
Boogaloo.
Bloody.
Semprini.
Nightmare.
Demon.
Ultravixens.

This brings up something I call "recombinant title syndome," in which a cheap movie is titled with familiar words (including those used in recent theatrical releases) in order to make the moviegoer think he's maybe heard something about it -- and since having heard something about a movie (even if it's bad) makes for better sales than complete ignorance, everyone ends up riding on everyone else's coattails.

Thus you have titles like "Mutant Species," "Final Assault,"  "Lethal Obsession," or the Jeff Speakman thriller "Deadly Outbreak" right on the heels of "Ourbreak."

Fearless Freep

Nathan, don't forget "Alien Terminator" and "Alien Predator" :)

"Alien Terminator" always sticks in my head because a) it didn't have an aliens and b) the cover art features Maria Ford in a  pose and outfit not to be found in the movie.

The Burgomaster

Or even "Recombinant Package/Poster Art Syndrome," where movie posters and video boxes all have similar pictures on them.

An example that stands out in my mind occurred during the "Rambo" years. I worked in a video store at the time and it seemed as though the box cover of every action movie had a picture of muscular guy wearing a torn shirt (or no shirt at all), ammunition belts, and holding an M-60 machine gun. I can't remember the title, but we actually had a Jackie Chan movie in the store (during the 1980s, before he had attained international fame) that showed a fairly muscular Jackie holding an M-60 machine gun. Everyone who rented the movie said it was a martial arts film and the picture on the cover was totally misleading.

The same goes for JAWS. How many movies were released that showed some sort of sea creature with a big mouth and sharp teeth swimming up from below a woman in a bikini? There were DOZENS of them . . .
