Those do get big.  The article says that they eat fruit and such, but wasn't there a news story lately that searches may have found the remains of Amelia Earhart, and that the bones had been scattered by coconut crabs?

There is a giant crab in "Yog:  Monster from Space" that looks like a giant mutated coconut crab.

Yep, in fact Arron Williams at his NODWICK site (Great comic btw.) posted it as a side with the Earhart story.

Ya know...I sure hope thats just a small trash can that things on...wait, they can climb!?

Big? They get monstrous, I was freaked just looking at the picture!

And if these things can crack coconuts with their claws, human bones might as well be matchsticks.

The guy who wrote the article makes a small reference to the mammoth spider, which is one of the relatives of the arthropod family. I can only imagine if spiders got as big as coconut crabs..you'd see me breaking a new record for the mile run for my age and weight class  :buggedout:

I REALLY want one of those for a pet! Can you imagine walking one of those through a dog park, just to see people's reactions? It would be just grand!

Yeah, these things can be monsters.

Here's some pictures with people in them for size comparrison.

From what I've heard, they get up to 10 pounds, can live for as long as 60 years, and are coming to kill you when you sleep.

There is just something really funny about a huge, scary arthropod that steals shiny things and knocks over your garbage. It's like the mundane truth of giant insect movies. :bouncegiggle:

I have it on good authority if one of them cracks your head open and eats your brain it can speak in your voice to lure your friends and loved ones to their DOOM.

They are very big (didn't realize that they only weigh 10 lbs, I thought they'd be more like 20 or 30), but very slow.  Your best defense against being killed by them is to walk away.  You don't have to run.  You don't have to job.  You don't even have to walk quickly.  Just so long as you can walk, you're safe.

From what I've read, you can eat them, but they're protected by law. Apparently, the texture and taste is what you'd expect of crab meat, but their fruit and coconut diet affects the flavour slightly. I can just imagine what nice, big pieces of meat you could pull out of those claws and legs if you boiled or steamed one of those things.

I dunno about eating them, they seem like they'd be the crab equivalent of giant catfish.

The hard part is finding a big enough pot. :teddyr:
