Academy Award Nominees for 2010

And here we go, the other set of movie nominees and I see Christopher Nolan is yet again getting the shaft for Best Director. What will it take to get a nomination? Does he need to direct a World War II movie or something? Also, did anyone see The King's Speech? I want to know what makes it so popular and deserving of all those nominations.

Anyways, I'm putting my money on Toy Story 3 for Best Animated Picture (What? Like it isn't obvious that'll win) and everything else I'll have to think on.

I agree Nolan deserved a Director nominee.

As for THE KING'S SPEECH, it's a historical drama with a great, if somewhat gimmicky, performance. It's pretty much tailored for the Oscars---drama, historical, star showpiece---the Academy typically eats all those up. It is a very solid movie.

My guesses for the major awards (might change these after I see THE FIGHTER, but I doubt it):
BEST PICTURE: Will win - "The Social Network" [Should win: "Inception"]
BEST DIRECTOR: Will win - David Fincher [Should win: David Fincher]
ACTOR: Will win - Colin Firth (take that one to the bank, the fix is in) [Should win - Colin Firth]
ACTRESS: Will win - Annette Benning [Should win - Jennifer Lawrence]
SUPPORTING ACTOR: Will win - ~~Jeremy Renner~~ Christian Bale - [Should have been nominated and won - Pete Postlewaithe]
SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Hailee Steinfeld [Should win - Jacki Weaver]
ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: Nolan for "Inception" [Should win - Nolan for "Inception"]
ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: "The Social Network" [Should win - "127 Hours"]
ANIMATED FILM: No contest

True. Any animated feature nominated for best movie wins the best animated feature category by default. Yay for Toy Story 3 - one of the best movies of 2010.

Surprisingly, the nominees are mostly from movies I haven't heard of nor have any intention of seeing.

I'd rather Megamind win for Best Animated. Toy Story 3 wasn't that great for me. I haven't really enjoyed any of the Toy Story series, to be honest; it's Pixar's weakest franchise, imho. Megamind, on the other hand, surprised the hell out of me with how good it was. I haven't had so much fun at a movie in ... I don't know when.

I'm not sure about Nolan getting a Best Screenplay for Inception. Now, I haven't watched all of Inception but what I did see was almost nothing but scene after scene of exposition.

What a concidence! That's the same for me!

Also, is it just me or does The King's Speech seem like it is tailor made to win Oscars like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was?

I'm more on the disappointed side that Summer Wars wasn't nominated, but what can you do?

I think BLACK SWAN, INCEPTION, 127 HOURS, TRUE GRIT are all exciting films, well worth seeing for anyone. You already saw TOY STORY 3.

I sure am glad they expanded the list to 10 nominees. In past years we probably would have ended up with a lame slate of Best Picture nominees that looked like THE FIGHTER, THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT, THE KINGS SPEECH, THE SOCIAL NETWORK, and WINTER'S BONE. All good movies but conservative choices.

Anyway, I saw THE FIGHTER yesterday and decided to pick Christian Bale for Best Supporting Actor in a weak field. He was very good and I wasn't crazy about any of the other options.

Of the films that have more than one nomination, I've seen three of them: "Alice in Wonderland," "Toy Story 3," and "True Grit."

After this list of nominations, the Academy should do something about what qualifies a person for a Best Actor/Actress nomination and a Supporting Actor/Actress nomination. Hailee Steinfeld surely belongs in Best Actress for "True Grit," but yet they placed her in "Supporting Actress," because she has a better chance there than in Best Actress.

I wouldn't put it past Geoffrey Rush to win Best Supporting Actor. If he does, it makes him rather unique in Hollywood history, as one of the few actors to win an Oscar for Best Actor for "Shine" and an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

It was a pretty sure bet that "Toy Story 3" and "How to Train Your Dragon" would be two of the three films nominated for Best Animated Film. The question was which film would take the third slot. I see it is "The Illusionist."

Looking at all the nominations, probably the nearest thing to a toss up is for Best Song between "I See the Light" from "Tangled" and "We Belong Together" from "Toy Story 3."
The Academy is one of the last conservative bodies in Hollywood. While I enjoyed "I See the Light," I thought "I Had a Dream" from the same film was a better song. But, comedy songs seldom get an Oscar nomination.

Not wanting to beat this to death, but I can't see all the love that "True Grit" is getting. It's not a crap film by any means, but I don't see it being as good as the Academy make it out to be neither. Of course, I thought 2010 was one of the weakest years for films in sometime, or maybe nobody in Hollywood reads fiction anymore.

Like most of you have already expressed, those films that were nominated, and I have not seen, I have no interest in seeing anytime in the future.

I like that I totally called Hailee getting a Best Supporting rather than lead. It's really lame though - she's clearly the lead character and had more screentime than Bridges who got a lead nom.

Also Rev you're the first person to not pick Portman for actress I have seen. My choice based on Academy history with an actress and role like that - haven't seen the film yet.

The reason I went with Benning is that I thought Hollywood would be desperate to give the movie about lesbians raising kids some kind of major award, and I didn't see anything else it could reasonably win.

The best argument for Portman is she's pregnant and so she may retire from acting and never get another chance. I think Lawrence should win but she's too young to snatch the award from the more experienced actresses. Of course none of my picks have anything to do with the quality of the performances. We'll see.
