Pain killers. Just got a bunch of teeth removed, and without pain killers I'm in agony as opposed to merely putting up with a somewhat sore jaw.

Pain killers. Just got a bunch of teeth removed, and without pain killers I'm in agony as opposed to merely putting up with a somewhat sore jaw.

I'll drink to that.  I was on Perkiset or Perkidans (forget which one) years ago when I had an impacted wisdom tooth on the left side of my jaw. It was pressing into the nerve of the next molar and caused me some serious pain.

I required an orthodontist for the surgery, and needed 6 stitches after.  While I could feel nothing the whole time as I was awake for it, I was somewhat freaked when the surgeon took a scraping tool to my exposed jawbone to even it down and remove any fragments. The noise was what got me....

I couldn't close my mouth for almost a week and a half and it was soft foods all the way. Needless to say, painkillers were valuable asset in that time period!

I'll third that. I was watching Glory recently and this made me think of that scene at the beginning where Matthew Broderick's character is being treated for a wound and behind a curtain you can hear a guy getting his leg amputated. You can't see it, but yikes, it was an effective scene because all you needed was the realization that the guy had NO DRUGS administered to help with the agony. Thank you science!

I remember that scene. Good God, man!  And you heard the sound too when his leg was being amputated.    And if you've ever seen what a dentists kit looked like back then, it'll make you glad that modern day dentistry is a bit, I say a bit more pleasant...

Modern dentistry. I was warned several times that my face would be swollen and bruised for days and that I'd have trouble eating anything for a while. Well...most of the swelling was gone yesterday (day after surgery), the only bruise came from the IV they stuck in me, and all the feeling came back to my face yesterday morning. Other than really minor annoyances like seeing commercials for food I can't eat and not being able to talk for too long since my tongue rubs against the stitches and irritates my gums ever so slightly as a result, I'd say this looks like it's going to be a smooth recovery.

One thing that helped me big time was a huge cold vanilla milkshake immediately after the surgery.  My mom, grams and her sister (my aunt Dottie) took me over to the old Golden Skillet and got me a huge shake. 

I would sip it, and them let it wash over the area, and man did that feel great...the colder the better.  And yeah, the feeling when you run your tongue over the stitches, hurts like an MF.  I've been there, brother.

...laughter.

I wanted to bring up this old topic I started to talk about one of the things I truly love in this world.

Laughter is one of the greatest things about the human experience. It's great in any form, but I'm not talking about the little giggle you get from seeing something clever. I'm talking about the uncontrollable laughter. You know what I'm talking about. I mean the laughter you get from something so funny that it is literally hurting you to keep laughing.

I don't care where it comes from. Maybe you've been up a little to late with some of your friends and everything is funny, or maybe it's some stupid thing you saw on TV.

I love to hear people laugh. It is the single most energizing thing for me.
