I did the VHS project and cleared a shelf and a half.  I don't think I'm getting rid of them though, rather I'll keep them in storage.

I got a DVD recorder and transferred quite a few VHS tapes to DVD+RW.  That works pretty well.  Gives you an excuse to watch all your old movies as you're recording them too.  You might need one of these http://www.topsalesdepot.com/divistdvc.html to get the copy-protected ones.  Otherwise you can just do it on your computer if you've gt the right software.
