Great album. The last of his trilogy of avante-garde 80's output, when he was still whimsical and campy and nostalgic but wierd at the same time. Rain Dogs is my favorite album from that period. I do like the stuff he did later, but he really went to the dark side after that, in my opinion, his wierdness being a bit more maniacal and disturbing. I mean, have you heard Read Gone? Wow.
I don't always talk about bad movies, but when I do, I prefer badmovies.org

Speak of the devil, now listening to

I've been listening to my Waits albums in reverse order (last album I purchased was "Mule Variations").  I agree that Swordfishtrombones-Rain Dogs-Frank's Wild Years seems like his peak, but I actually haven't heard "Real Gone" (though I've heard cuts from it).  "Rain Dogs" is my favorite too, but it's everybody's favorite.  For I am a rain dog too.

Tom Waits, "Swordfishtrombones"

You really ARE listening in reverse order. You're going to be hitting Heart Attack and Vine soon, an odd period for Tom right before he went into the avant-garde phase, but you could see the writing on the wall. The nice thing about reverse order is that you will culminate with Closing Time, a great album from his very gritty beginnings.

As for Real Gone, I didn't care for it very much. I have it but I rarely listen to it. That was the album I bought and once I listened to it said "I think Tom has finally gone over the deep end completely." It sounds as if he is intentionally trying to make something unpleasant to listen to, like he turned the gain up all the way on everything, recorded the result on tape, threw the tape into the ocean, and then mixed it down.

Loung-ey, lightly jazzy, mostly electronic.  Fun stuff.
