The earlier 1998 DVD releases of Anchor Bay's THE EVIL DEAD was in a 1.33:1 Full Frame format. It was never matted down to a 1.85:1 widescreen for some unknown reason.

The 1998 DVD is now discontinued and the recent DVD release from Anchor Bay is in 1.85:1.

The original was directed by George A. Romero, and written by Romero and John Russo.  The remake was directed by Tom Savini (who did the make-up effects for Dawn and Day and has a long history with Romero), and written by Romero.  While the classic is, well, a classic, I do think the remake has a smarter script.  It works some interesting twists in both the characters and storyline.

Gosh, remember when the Internet was supposed to be a wonderful magical place where intelligent, articulate people shared information? Neighborhood went to hell real fast... - Anarquistador

Yeah, I like the remake too.   I would recommend it over DAY, actually.  It's probably one of the better remakes--it plays cable a lot and I almost always switch over to watch at least some of it.
