ORPHAN (2009)

What the hell is wrong with audiances nowadays? While morons are lining up to see overated garbage like TRANSFORMERS,AVATAR,HARRY POTTER and TWILIGHT ,a film without overblown CGI,great acting,and nail biting suspence went right past them.
I'm talking about ORPHAN (2009).
I just watched this and was blown away.
Now,I dont really care for most modern horror films. Plot and charecter development goes out the window to be replaced by cgi monsters,extreme gore and torture,and waaaay too many so called "hip" teenagers.
But ORPHAN is a modern CLASSIC...and I don't throw around that term lightly.
It concerns a family who adopt a nice,but odd,9 year old Russian girl (played brillantly by Isabelle Fuhrman) who puts kids like Damien and Reagan to shame.
I don't want to give it away....just treat yerself. See ORPHAN. I think it's the best horror film to come out in the last 20 dam years.

I don't know what movie you were watching, RC, but the only horror in Orphan was the way the family treated the adopted girl.  Even before she started acting crazy, the mom and brother were hostile toward her.  Hell, I'd probably have gone nuts and murdered them, too.  Then she turned out to be a 30 year old dwarf, because the people who made the movie were afraid that if they played the premise completely straight, someone would call them a bunch of pedos.  It was a movie that pulled every punch and had no balls whatsoever.

If you recall,the little psycho had killed quite a few people long before she ever stepped foot into her new adopted home.
Sure,the brother was a little puke,but trying to murder someone is a little extreme.
And you could have had the decency to give a SPOILER alert before you ruined the ending for anyone who hasnt seen the film.

I also liked that the movie was set in the cold of winter....if it was set during spring or summer,it wouldn't have worked nearly as well.
Gave it a claustrophobic feel...much like the SHINING.

The movie was originally written to take place during the fall, and some exterior shots were filmed to establish this. Shortly before principal photography was set to begin in December 2007, the Toronto locations were hit with near-record snowfall, forcing the change of setting to winter. One of the scenes written out as a result was a Halloween carnival at Daniel and Esther's school.

I don't have any problem with akiraturbo, but I often wonder what his movie tastes are.

I liked Orphan because it had elements of both b-movie and mainstream thriller. The premise is kind of "b," but the execution and production values were a bit higher. I enjoyed it. Don't worry about akiraturbo, he has a tendency to p**s over movies he didn't like very openly, which i don't have a problem with. I do agree however that he should have alerted the spoiler.

I'd have loved the movie if she had actually succeeded in killing the little girl on the playground, the son, and the mother, and then taken the daughter to train her in the ways of the murderous cherub.  It would have helped if she actually had been a tween girl, as well.  The whole dwarf thing felt like a serious copout.

That's cool. The only real exception that I have to your assessment is referring to it as a horror film. It really isn't. It may have aspirations of the central antagonist trying to resemble such characters as Damien, but I never got the feeling that it was trying to present itself as a horror film. I'm not sure where you got that. It's no more a horror film than The Hand That Rock the Cradle. It's a pure escapist thriller that feeds off of some sensational stories about Russian orphans. That's all it really is. I thought it was entertaining in spite of, and in some ways because of, it's preposterousness. That and it had some atmospheric elements that worked for me.
