10 years ago, I fully supported the death penalty
5 years ago, I decided I support it in theory, but not in practice just yet
I just realize that I now fully oppose it

May I ask why?

My reason for opposing the death penalty is that it's irreversible.

First, I was for it in theory but not in practice because I know how idiotic our legal system is and can be. There are too many examples of things that are downright stupid going on in trials. I'm amazed at how often the defense is forbidden from telling the jury that a witness for the prosecution was a SUSPECT before they became a witness. I can see a jury believing those people because they don't see a reason that person would lie. Also, it seems as if an outlook on our legal system is one of "If person X was so stupid as to ________, then they deserve what they get" or some other way of letting stupid people get the short end of the stick, when in all reality the vast majority of stupid people are stupid because of things that are out of their control.

Besides being irreversible, not only do I NOT believe it is a deterrent, I think it's the opposite: SOOOO many criminals are self-loathing, self-destructive, and suicidal, it's not surprising that many of them don't steer clear of death or threats of harm. We have MANY examples of "suicide by cop" in this country, it's not like they are worrying about the threat of the death penalty. Also, it puts inmates into a mindset of "THEY can kill US, so WE can kill THEM", and the "THEM" that they are closest to are the Correctional Officers. On top of all that, eye witnesses are HIGHLY overrated and depended on/trusted too much in trials. That unreliability of cross-race identification really puts many cases into question to me, as I'm having a much harder time learning the names of people that are Black, Native, or anyone else not white like me.

There's a guy in prison who was convicted primarily on a forensic science that has been widely condemned  since then, and he was denied a re-trial or an appeal. The Feds overturned many cases, even ones where that science was NOT the primary factor, but it seems some states don't.

I'm against it mainly because I suspect some wrongfully convicted people would be executed.

Not really a suspicion so much as a statistical certainty that if you put enough people to death, some of them will be innocent.

I think the death penalty, when properly applied, is a balanced, symmetrical, and reasonable act of justice.  That being said, I do think that the evidence needs to be carefully evaluated and irrefutable. And let them have every appeal they can.  BUT, once it is finally established, let it be done.   If there is a shadow of a doubt, let it be life in prison.

But for a guy like Khalid Shiek Muhammad, the mastermind of 9/11?  Or John Wayne Gacy, or Charles Manson?

Because nerds love to see people more nerdy than themselves, and the blond chick is hot.

Otherwise, it has nothing to offer imo.

I'm very sad to say my sister in law's long time boyfriend was found dead today.  He was only 26 years old.  Though we didn't hang out much I knew him enough to say he was a soft spoken nice kid.  RIP Kenny, you leave us way too soon man.

Thanx dudes, I've been kind of on the outside of the whole thing seeing I only really saw him on holidays and family events.  However like I said he was a nice guy and it was a very sad loss.  Plus, and rightfully so, the inlaws are saddened by my SIL's loss.
