I saw Martin Scorsese's HUGO today and thought it was fabulous.  It's a joyous tribute to the pioneers of movie-making and Scorsese's Christmas gift to movie lovers.  It's a wonderful family movie and anyone who has studied the early days of filmmaking should get an extra special thrill out of it.  Not only that, but this movie is the very best use of 3-D technology I have ever seen.

Scorsese seemed to create every frame of the film with the highest possible level of magic, energy and love.  And his craftsmanship as a great story-teller leaps off the screen from beginning to end.

One of the biggest surprises is Sacha Baron Cohen who has an important supporting role and turns in an excellent performance.  His character is far removed from Borat and Bruno.

I hate this phrase, but I'm using it here anyway:  This is the "feel good" movie of the year.  Don't miss it.

This movie may have sneaked its was into my top 10 favorites of all time.  It's that good.

I agree, it's a good'un.  Though there's nothing inappropriate it's not really aimed a kids but at adult movie lovers.

Sorry (though I'm only copying and pasting this because I'm an incompetent writer incapable of expressing myself).

The lady in your avatar has apparently no such expression problems.

Looks like I'm not alone.  Rotten Tomatoes gave HUGO a 94%.

This movie kind of snuck up on me. I've seen the promos, saw that it was Scorcese, but just haven't given it much real estate in my brain. I think I know how the wife and I are spending our next date night.

I do agree with that review on one point---Asa Butterfield was bland, which is a problem seeing as how he's the main character.  But that's nearly my only objection.  Cohen wasn't laugh-out-loud, Keystone Kop funny, but I liked his understated oddness in this role.  I had no problem with the girl, and Kingsley was great as always.

Plus, it was nice to see Christopher Lee in a supporting role.  I didn't recognize him at first.  Then my wife asked, "Is that Dracula?"
