Every time I mention this movie, I always call it "Stormship Troopers" and have to correct myself. Every time. For 14 years.

I'd be a heck of a lot more excited about another direct-to-video sequel. A Hollywood remake of the first movie...major yawnage. Just another bland, banal, flat, flavorless, humdrum, insipid CGI fest.

In 3-D.

I'm a little angry if they do this. The Vernon movie was great and it didn't come out that long ago. Why remake it?

Hah! Whenever I see "Super Troopers" on the guide on t.v. I always think it says "Starship Troopers."

It'd be interesting if they kept the sort of pro-fascist subtext of the book. That'd be rather different.

I think it's there in the movie, if you look hard enough. Yet, the movie is definitely more self-revealing than pro-fascist.

I think it's there in the movie, if you look hard enough. Yet, the movie is definitely more self-revealing than pro-fascist.

They made fun of the fascist elements in the movie. The kids stomping on the bugs in a 'patriotic' rally was purely sarcastic.

I never read the novel, but from what I understand militarism is more an issue than fascism per se. The Terran Federation is set up such that only those that have served have full rights, including the right to vote. Service is not compulsory, since people can opt not to serve, but they will not be full citizens nor have full access to the rights of citizens.

This is a middle ground that is certainly pro-military, but not specificially fascist. I am a veteran and in my experience most veterans would agree with such a policy. This is supported by the general view of most of my fellow veterans that we are superior to non-veterans, more patriotic, more deserving of the American way of life. I do not share this view. I do not feel superior or more deserving than my non-veteran fellow Americans in any way.

Service, whether military or otherwise, to society is a socialist concept, and because of it's nationalistic tendencies, it is no wonder that such a policy would get immediately compared to Nazi Germany, and so Godwin's Law is highly accelerated. I am more opposed to general statism, be it socialism, communism, fascism. They are essentially sides of the same statist coin. This is why I am, and will always be, opposed to compulsory service, or the notion that those that serve are more entitled than those who do not. In fact, I have a great deal of respect for those that do not serve and choose to live a life of freedom and self-reliance, and rugged individualism. Those are the people that make a free society worth living in. I would much rather have a bunch of them running around than a society of institutionalized veterans.

Required service to society, in any form, goes against the spirit of a free society. I've thought on this long a hard. I doubt there is anybody that will be able to convince me otherwise.
