Played hookey from work part of today to see this movie.

Everything that Resident Evil should have been but wasn't.

Entertaining, cutting edges, slow but with bursts of Ultra Violence. I found the negative comparisons to Blair Witch and Dawn of the Dead to be true, but not in the negative sense.

SPOILER DON'T READ NEXT LINE IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT YET!

I especially liked killing off one of the apparent protagonists at the beginning, it set you on edge and opened to possibility that they could kill anyone at any time.

I thought the ending to "Happy Tails" for the movie, they should have stopped, I thought, with the crashing through the gate . . .

Worst inconsistancy was "Why could outbreaks be contained in Paris & New York, but not in the UK?" The "New Age" Sgt also said "how could it hop the Atlantic?", if he'd payed attention . . . it did cross, and why were no international radio signals available?

Still a great 3 - 3.5 slimer movie.

Thoughts?

Maybe the radio reports about it crossing were bogus.  Good point about no international radio signals, though....

To me, 28 Days Later was a pleasant surprise, because I really like the books Day of the Triffids and Resident Evil, and 28DL was both. It was far more RE than the RE movie itself, and far more DotT than anything else I have seen.

As far as the inconsistencies go, I think the biggest one is the spreading of the disease. Some parts of the movie suggest that the disease did reach overseas, while others suggest that it didn't. Personally, I don't see any way for a disease with incubation time of 10-20 seconds to spread other than through walking diseased - even if some diseased managed to get on board (how???), by the time the plane, ship, or any other vehicle, was to land/stop, there would be nobody to actually perform the task...

But I don't mind inconsistencies. What I do mind are:

1) Too neat and clean London (there should be far more garbage on the streets, not counting piles of rotting bodies)

2) Jim turning into Rambo near the end of the movie - after all, the whole first half he was a blundering idiot (why would he contantly split from the others and walk alone into zombie-haunted places?)

Drezzy

Because he was p**sed off. Hell hath no fury like a man protecting women that was almost killed. Or have you not seen enough generic 80's action movies?

And as the world began crumbling down
Nobody around seemed to care

Pepak

Perhaps. But being p**sed off seems like a rather weak substitute for training, weapons and superior numbers. Most of the movie was quite realistic, so what;s the point of destroying all that by a pointless transformation of a hero into superhero?

Conrad

Because - I think - you're supposed to question as to whether Jim is really Jim or one of the Infected.

Not enough rubbish?  There aren't any people left to spread the rubbish about!

The lack of international radio signals is explained by ... by ... by the emergency Geneva Accord, where the nations of the world decided to isolate the UK in order to avoid infection themselves.  The American Forces Network Europe agreed to jam foreign broadcasts for the duration of the emergency.  Will that do?

The disease did *not* reach any other country - but to protect themselves, the impression given by other nations was that they *were* infected - thus removing any reason for the uninfected UK population to try escaping.

I'm delighted to see other people recognising Day of the Triffid's influence at work here, and even more delighted that 28DL seems to be so successful in the USA.  There is room for a prequel that establishes what happened between the first act in the film and the second; well, I can dream, can't I!

28DL made me cuss during the "jump scenes". It was so scarry I had nightmares after I saw it (I enjoy those nightmares). The movie did have slow momments but it is a F**KING good movie!
I can see the virus getting to the USA, because the US would fly in and get samples for its contra-biological weapons program.
As for Jim being a p***y in the beginning of the flick, he had just come out of a coma and his IV drip must have been empty for at least a week.
My big question is: After that man that saved Jim was up on a Kiosk and saw the ppl below him go "violent", How did he get away?

Day of the Triffids

Who wrote the book, James White? I don't remember.

Great movie, even better book.

These kiosks tend to be lumped together.  Given my experience of Picadilly Station in Manchester, it's possible to climb from one to another and thus get to a different part of the station.  Some are high enough to permit (sufficiently desperate!) people to reach the station's upper windows and to escape that way.

TY Conrad, Please tell me about Tango ©. Is it such a great drink that Jim almost got killed for it?
I think those jets at the end of the flick were UK jets. Am I wrong?
If you liked 28DL check out Omega Man. It is a movie from 1971, staring Chalton Heston.
As for WATER WORLD, when they got to "Dry Land", wouldn't they find a bunch of sherpas on top of Mount Everest?

Drezzy

Seeing as how he only went DIRECTLY one-on-one with two soldiers, one who he had the element of surprise on and one who was the cook, it's not too hard to believe.

He simply was p**sed off, devised a plan, and put the plan into effect.

And as the world began crumbling down
Nobody around seemed to care

Conrad

"Tango" is just a fizzy orange juice, which is endlessly promoted on TV, etc.  Nothing special, just well-known.
Yes, the jet was British - a Hawker Hunter from the 50's, I think - but pretending to be Scandinavian.  It cost £5,000 per time for the pilot to take off from the airport and do a pass over the Lake District. The director says that a Finnish friend of theirs added the final words the Scandinavian pilot supposedly speaks, but not speaking Finnish I'm not sure exactly what they say.!

i haven't seen it yet but i have had 3 or 4 people say the same thing to me.
these people aren't dead, they're infected with this "Rage" virus, so why aren't the angry people attacking one another?
is this true?
