Wow!

What a kickass film!
I was pleasantly surprised!

This is without a doubt one of the best roles I've seen Johnny Depp in ever.
Without his great performance this film surely would've sunk.  (pun intended!)

The effects of the skeletons are excellent and well done especially when they enter and leave the moonlight as they fight.

The film was like a cross between a pirate film and "Army of Darkness".

It does run a little long though at 2 hrs. 23 minutes.

It was either this one or "The League of Extraordinary Gentleman" but after reading all the horrid reviews about LXG by nearly every critic  I decided on Pirates of the Carribean.

I was not disappointed!

Have you seen it?

What did you think?

I really enjoyed it also.  Depp was awesome.

But I think Ebert wrote the best review for the film.  "There's a nice little 90-minute B movie trapped inside the 143 minutes" of  the film.

I read Ebert's review as well but can't quite see what he was getting at by saying there was a B-movie within it.

What part of the film was he referring to?

Just came back from PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN. Nice film. Really enjoyed it. Johnny Depp is something else. I enjoy most period films that cover British society and redcoats. They an ok job covering the subject of pirates. Some of the battle scenes are a blur, but not as bad as some recent battle films.

The film does in fact remind one of ARMY OF DARKNESS with the living dead pirates. If you are familiar with Marlon Brando films you might also recall MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY. Johnny Depp seems to be covering similiar ground of his mentor.

Here is a small list of my favoite pirate type movies:

Cut Throat Island
The Princess and the Pirate
Mutiny on the Bounty (all three)
Treasure Island

Dunners

hated cut throat island. mathew modine and renny harlan really do suck. and what makes it so bad is that it could have been lot better, but there really isnt much development given to the characters. the story was so-so too.

save the world, kill a politician or two.

Seen it. Liked it. Especially, liked the swordfight between Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom. One of the better swordfights I have seen.
As a bit of trivia, it seems that Johnny Depp has admitted that he based his character in the film on musician Keith Richards.
Enjoy the film. I did.

Orlando Bloom played in Cut throat island didn't he.

Mofo Rising

This was one of my favorite films of that year.  I actually went to the theater to see another movie, but for some reason couldn't see it and ended up seeing PIRATES instead (even though I missed the first ten minutes).  Why not?  I didn't expect much from it and ended up loving the whole thing.

The movie was pure entertainment.  It was funny, the swashbuckling scenes swashbuckled.  There were even moments of pure angst (Rush's character, "I feel... cold.").  The only recent movie where I've had this much fun watching it would be SHAUN OF THE DEAD.

Not to mention I was hungover when I watched it and still enjoyed it.

Needless to say I recommended the movie to everybody.

The critique of the film being too long falls flat for me.  I realized it was long when I was watching it, but I was enjoying it every second.  It's not like there wasn't enough plot to fill those moments.  It reminds me of APOLLO 13, which was very long but so filled with dramatic tension that I didn't even notice.

Alright, I'll stop namechecking other movies.  At any rate, I thought PIRATES was great and would recommend it without reservation, which is not something I would do for very many (almost any) movies.

"That's interesting."
Every dead body that is not exterminated becomes one of them. It gets up and kills. The people it kills, get up and kill.

Neville

I agree in that it is too long. For me the first battle between the Sparrow's ship  and the other one (I mean the one where the good guys end up loading the cannons with forks and knives) was climatic enough. After that I started to lose interest very quickly. Still, it was loads of fun, and far better shot than the horrible "Cuthroat Island". Man, that was a stinker.

Due to the horrifying nature of this film, no one will be admitted to the theatre.

They are making two sequels back to back I believe.  Johnny Depp said he based his character on the Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones.  In fact , they work Richards into the sequel as Jack Sparrow's father.

And you thought Trek isn't cool.
