Stephen King will still be relatively popular in fifty years.

Harry Potter will be less a classic and more remembered in association with its era.

Anne Rice's vampire books shall retain cult appeal on a minor scale, but Twilight will be forgotten.

As will Tom Clancy, John Grisham, Dan Brown, Belva Plain, Mitch Albom, and virtually all writers whose books made the best seller lists over the last third of a century.

Joyce Carol Oates, John Updike and Norman Mailer will appeal to the literary set and be assigned reading in colleges but won't hold popular appeal.

Deserved or not many writers we regard as minor today will be artificially inflated via proclamations of worthiness. I won't name them but I have a few in mind. This assignment of a sort of posthumous dignity always comes to pass as scholars rather than the general public go on to assign retrospective merit.

The biggest surprise on the future literary front may be that the art of the comic strip will stand the test of time and many comic strip writers of our age will be elevated to importance for their social commentary and their capacity to effectively lend voice to the perceived neuroses and angst of their epochs.

If I'm right about all this, y'all  owe me a Coke in fifty years...

I heard this quote somewhere - maybe here - and it made a deep impression:
"In a hundred years, we have gone from teaching Latin and Greek in high school to teaching remedial English in college!"
"I shall smite you in the nostrils with a rod of iron, and wax your spleen with Efferdent!!"

Has anybody here seen Return to Nuke 'Em High Volume 1 2013 yet? If so - was it good?

I had no idea this was even released...

I always wondered
       what it'd feel like
to raise up and
         crack my head really hard
                     on the cabinet door
                             while cooking dinner.

   Now I know!
What does not kill me makes me stranger.

It's just playing at film festivals and so forth right now. No DVD release date yet. You'll hear more after it's out.
I'll take you places the hand of man has not yet set foot...

My ankle is the size of a baseball - got hurt at work. I hope it's not broke again.

It's not so bad. I can still walk... been putting ice then heat on it.

Prince is suing some fans for illegally publishing some unauthorized concert footage.

I keep thinking that MAD Magazine predicted this back in the 1980s.

By the way, Pete Seeger is dead.

In the 90s I already missed the 80s, and I still missed the 80s in the 00s. Just recently I started to miss the 90s. Looking back it seemed like a strange decade, with lots of good and bad changes, choices and directions in my life. Now I wonder how long it will take until I miss the 00s. I still draw a blank when I think of that decade.

The implying increased beyond the maximum level.
yeah no.

You know, claws, I've noticed there seems to be about a twenty year delay before nostalgia sets in. I think that is enough time for bad memories to fade and good times to be missed, and for a new generation with few or no memories of the previous decade to emerge and feel a sense of having missed it. That's why Happy Days came out in the '70s recalling the '50s, and That 70's Show came out in the '90s and it celebrated the '70s, and now we're seeing some shows about the '80s (The Goldberg's) and even the '90s out there. So in another decade I bet everyone looks back on the Bush years with...rose-colored amnesia.

Two things that used to weird me out as a kid; That somebody could like a a Reece's peanut butter cup while thinking a Charlie Brown ice cream was gross, and that an ice cream vender could be totally weirded out that I like Charlie Brown...
