I remember a film clip that showed a guy in a robe taking a woman down a staircase, inside a castle.  He opens a door to a dungeon and pushes her inside, where she is a attacked by an ape-like creature.  It had a hammer horror feel to it; set in medieval times.

Does anyone know the name of it?

"The Curse of the Werewolf" has a woman raped in a dungeon by an imprisoned beggar. I seem to recall him looking pretty ratty, but it's been a long time since I've seen it.

Might it perhaps be Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell?

Or maybe a film version of the classic Edgar Allan Poe story THE MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE.  There's a killer ape in it.

Yeah there's numerous cheesy killer ape films from the black and white era of films too (from the 30s in particular, but even from the 40s through the 80s - Kong Island has cheesy ape, or should I say guys in ratty ape suits, attacks) although this sounds far more polished from the description.
