That's Max von Sydow as Ming the Merciless, and he was great in the role. There is some talk of doing a sequel (?) a remake (?) of the original film,. If so, then Max may be back, because if one remembers one of the final scenes in the film, then it is a possibility, despite all that he took, Ming have lived.
