Movies remade in other genres

Some movies have been remade in genres that are different from the original.  For instance:

* RIO BRAVO (western) was remade as ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 (cop movie)

* THE SEVEN SAMURAI (Samurai movie) was remade as THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (western)

* HIGH NOON (western) was remade as OUTLAND (sci-fi)

What are some other movies that you think could (or should) be remade in different genres?

Oh, you forgot the obvious one:

Hamlet remade as The Lion King

JohnL

And Seven Samurai remade as Battle Beyond the Stars.

Seven Samurai is a great example. It's had a pretty diverse treatment.

In a similar vein, Yojimbo was done as a western, A Fistfull of Dollars, and as a gangster movie, The Last Man Standing.

I'd have to say my favourite adaptation of Hamlet is Strange Brew.

Hey guys, I'm new here. Please check out my topic if you would, I could use some help finding out the name of a movie.

One other example is "Red River" remade as "Crimson Tide". it's not as obvious as the others but if you look at the interaction of the characters you'll see the similarities, even the names of the movies are dead give aways.

I'd like to see Pokemon remade as an urban tale of a homeless boy and his fighting cock. Once a few parents saw it that'd insure that parent groups banned the damned show and cards post haste.

Take it easy,

Romeo and Juliet (classic) was remade as itself (gangsta')

This just goes to prove that there are really only about seven movies.  The rest are all just variations on a theme.

How about...

King Leer = Ran (one of the best movies ever made, put together by my hero, Kurosawa).

Star Wars (space opera) = The Hidden Fortress (Samurai, also by Krusawa)

Pinnochio (annoying fantasy) = A.I. (more annoying Sci Fi)

Those are just off the top of my head.

As for "should be" remades...

Just about anything by Shakespere would probably work as science fiction of (duh) fantasy, but I would especially like to see Two Gentlemen of Verona, or espeiaclly Much Ado About Nothing.  I would love to see what could be done with that (rather horrifying) wedding scene in a futuristic setting.

Then theres the old formula of...

Any given Western ---> Samurai movie
Any given Samurai movie -----> Western

Both the above generas work pretty well in translation to Science Fiction as well.

Just my opinion.

Speaking of Shakespeare, the movie CHINA GIRL is an updating of the ROMEO AND JULIET story.  And FORBIDDEN PLANET is a sci-fi version of THE TEMPEST.

How about these ideas:

* GONE WITH THE WIND - replace the Civil War with a futuristic, intergalactic war.

* THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE - remake as a wacky comedy starring Jim Carrey in the Laurence Harvey role and Jack Black in the Frank Sinatra role.

* THE LONGEST DAY - remake as a caveman movie, with one tribe launching a massive assault on the territory of another tribe.

* OLIVER! - remake as pirate movie with Oliver running away and meeting the Artful Dodger, who invites him aboard Fagin's pirate ship.

"Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me either. Just pretty much leave me the hell alone."

Funny thing about Seven Samurai is that it was inspired by  Kurasawa's love of  American westerns.

And you thought Trek isn't cool.

And THE WARRIOR AND THE SORCERESS starring David Carradine.

"OLIVER! - remake as pirate movie with Oliver running away and meeting the Artful Dodger, who invites him aboard Fagin's pirate ship"

and Orlando Bloom can be Oliver, Johnny Depp can be the Dodger and Geoffery Rush can be Fagin!

;-)

Funny thing is, that could actually work: Rush would suit as Fagin really well, and Bloom is the typical Oliver type.

I want Jean-Claude Van Damme to do a remake of "Oklahoma!"

While on a journey, Chuang Tzu found an old skull, dry and parched.
With sorrow, he questioned and lamented the end of all things.
When he finished speaking, he dragged the skull over and, using it for a pillow, lay down to sleep.
In the night, the skull came to his dreams and said, 'You are a fool to rejoice in the entanglements of life.'
Chuang Tzu couldn`t believe this and asked, 'If I could return you to your life, you would want that, wouldn`t you?'
Stunned by Chuang Tzu`s foolishness, the skull replied, 'How do you know that it is bad to be dead?'

"King Leer" ROTFL! Actually, the correct title is "King Lear," but, I must admit I like "King Leer" better.

And, of course, "The Hidden Fortress" came before "Star Wars" I even think George Lucas acknowledges the influence of "The Hidden Fortress" upon "Star Wars."

Here are some more remakes. As such a list would be almost endless again, I have listed only the ones where I have seen both the original and the remake, and in which the film genera changed from original to remake.

The adventure film "Gunga Din" remade as a western "Sergeants Three."

The drama "Anna and the King of Siam" remade as a musical "The King and I,"
which was remade back into a drama called "Anna and the King."

The crime drama "The Asphalt Jungle" remade as a western "The Badlander."

The adventure film "Against All Flags" remade into a comedy-advemture "The King's Pirate."

The war film "Sahara" remade as the western "Last of the Comanches." Lloyd Bridges actually appearing in both films.

The war film "The Lost Patrol" remade as the western "Badlands."

The live action musical "Oliver" being remade as the animated musical "Oliver and Company." "Oliver" itself was a remake of the drama "Oliver Twist."

Enjoy all the films.

Van Damme in an "Oklahoma" remake! That's a good one. Van Damme would be happy if he could remade himself.

Anyway, back to the topic: "Yojimbo" was also remade as the crappy Van Damme movie "Coyote Moon" aka "Van Damme's inferno" (probably because it is hellish, because Van Damme should bein hell or maybe both) and the even crappier Albert Pyun's "Omega Doom".

Oh, and "Barb Wire" starring Pamela Anderson is nothing but a lousy MTV remake of "Casablanca" with Pam playing Bogart. I can't remember any scene in the original featuring Bogie on a transparent bathtub, though.

Due to the horrifying nature of this film, no one will be admitted to the theatre.

The book "Red Alert" was made into "Dr. Strangelove" by Kubrick, and later into a serious (but little-known) TV movie, also called "Red Alert", by some other guy.
