Almost exactly the same thing as that clown at the fire happened at the Beverly Hills Supper Club disaster in May 1977. A busboy ran on stage in the middle of a comedy routine to announce the massive structure was ablaze, and people thought it was a joke and few reacted. I believe the final death toll was 165, nearly all in the room where the warning was issued.

Years ago when I was seeing Gladiator, a fire alarm went off and someone on a loudspeaker said ignore it, it's a malfunction, but I got out of there and got a voucher for seeing a movie again at a later time.

Fire is the devil's only friend, and the devil has never been kind to any person.

Being an old git, one remembers about reading this tragedy in the news. You are correct ER, the death toll was 165, with the last victim dying 9 months later. With 200 injured. It was the worst fire in the U.S. since 1944 and the circus fire in Harford, Connecticut, in which 168 people died. While there were some claims that arson was involved, it really seems to be an accident waiting to happen, as the loss of life was put down to . . .

overcrowding -- inadequate fire exits -- faulty wiring -- lack of firewalls -- poor construction -- safety code violations -- and poor oversight by regulatory officials.

Most of which means that a fire of such magnitude is unlikely to occur today.

Commandancy of the The Alamo

Bejar, Feby. 24th. 1836

To the People of Texas & All Americans in the World—

Fellow Citizens & compatriots—

I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna — I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours & have not lost a man — The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken — I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly from the walls — I shall never surrender or retreat.  Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch — The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days.  If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country — Victory or Death.
