Probably shameful to admit, but I liked it till they started adding other puppets besides Barney, Baby Bop and B.J. Would go with the Backyard Gang as the best bunch of kids.

Personally I have always found Barney to be full of dark allegory and hidden meaning. There is simply no way that show could be about what it depicts on the surface.
