A co-worker today said he hated the movie Groundhog Day because they repeated scenes too often.

At least, that's what Gary Busey told me...

I've noticed Canadians often carry on conversations like this:

".....Really?"

"Really...."

"....It does?"

"It does...."

".....No?"

"No....."

"....But he didn't?"

"But he didn't....."

Stumbled across a story that said, Trio of judges select Vermont's best maple syrup and I thought, "Huh, first time I've ever heard of Americans taking Canadian jobs."

There are 4200 or so religions on earth.

Either 1 is right and 4199 are wrong  or all 4200 are wrong.

Which is more likely?

That depends if you posit the existence of God or not.
If there is no God, they are all wrong.
If there IS a God, one of them must be right.

Also many of those hypothetical "4200" are likely sects within the same basic faith, since Buddism alone has more than a thousand varieties, and Christianity probably at least as many, so you could probably number 99 percent of religions to fall into either Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Animism/paganism, Judaism, or what might be termed fringe cults (without implying a negative connotation).

It really comes down to more like a 1 in 7 shot if you break it all down.

I think Islam can be dismissed as one man's extremely successful power grab,

Buddhism is like a great pearl that formed around the sand-grain of a semi-legendary figure, growing with time long after his death.

Hinduism has lovely stories but it is a religion/religions that coalesced around distant myths and metaphorical figures, sometimes historical heroes, but it lacks real core unity.

Animism...well, yeah, okay, these tend to be very localized instead of universal. Maybe the creator of the multiverse is a feathered snake king who resides on a specific mountain but I think certain things argue against it.

Judaism...its best argument may be the miraculous survival of the Jews across history. Jews make a case for being chosen by G_d by their collective brilliance.

Christianity validates many Jewish prophecies and makes its case well on its own. If any religion has a claim to being "the one" the evidence for Christianity seems to me strongest.

All religions may be wrong but all cannot be right. If one has to be right, Christianity has a strong case.

My boss told me today he would like to be the meat filling in a sandwich with Maggie Thatcher and Tina Turner.

I just thought I should share that mental image with everyone else.

The bottle of perfume that Willie sent
Was highly displeasing to Millicent.
Her thanks were so cold
They quarreled, I'm told,
Through that silly scent Willie sent Millicent.

Why?  They could all still be wrong.

I think the argument there is that an intelligent being would not create other intelligent beings and not try to communicate with them in some way. And if God is truly "God" then he would find a way to transmit his message and make sure that it was preserved through the ages.

I dunno, Indy, when I'm playing Dark Souls and make my character jump off a cliff, I try to make her think she did so with free will, not me nudging the controller. Sometimes it pleases God to remain unseen during messy fire-mage deaths.

I would try to avoid getting into a religious arguments. My reason is that I really don't care if you're religious or not, just if you're an asshat that needs a reality check or not.
yeah no.

I think I agree with you. God either is or God is not, human opinion matters little there when tabulating the ultimate answer. Religion, politics, only mathematics is inarguable, so much else is opinion. What I do like to consider as a sort of philosophical/historical exercise is the provable claims of human religions. Those I find somewhat fascinating, though few topics come so ready-loaded to cause hard feelings if not handled with care, and few topics are so often deliberately weaponized both by believers and against believers. There should be a certain amount of freedom FROM religion in this world, and a certain degree of tolerance. But above all people ought to be able to have a polite discussion or even a debate on metaphysical subjects without it becoming an argument. I work hard on that, and used to privately belittle religious convictions, though I gave that up long before I acquired any of my own. And yes, asshats  of all stripes abound.
