I think we are very different from rats; so I don't know how perfectly the parallel applies.

Anyone can become an addict but some are greatly more disposed to it. Addicts when faced with their fix of choice have two choices: continue to get their fix, or resist it by whatever means they are able. Most do not overcome their addictions. Increasingly addicts die. Humans aren't rats but if we truly share a common ancestor, well, we may not be as far apart as we like to think. That was interesting to me.
