Dunno if we have any on this board, but I'm sure SOMEONE will know this...

In general, what "level" of insult is "wanker"?

I mean, is it a mild one like "goofball" or "dummy", bit more serious like, "jerk" or "idiot", or maybe a mild swear word territory like "a***ole"?

Mild swear. Jerk isn't really one that is used in the UK, but idiot would be a kids playground insult (say under 12). Once you get to your teenage years you'd be more inclined to call someone a wanker and it cause offence. By the time you are an adult, you'd be more likely to laugh and say "Yeah, you telling me you don't?"

The Afrikaans version of that word is "draad trekker" [dhraad trekker] meaning wire puller

"Wanker" is the same as "Jerk off" or clinically, "masturbator".

Depending on context in Australia it can even be a term of endearment (albeit rarely).
