Well, here's a trailer for something I did not expect to see.

if I'd never heard of Rocky before then watching that trailer I'd be thinking he was some demented evil psychopath.

I've always thought the first two Rocky's and the first Rambo showed that Stallone can act, but he went down the mega bucks action star route and didn't really perform in the same way until Copland many years later.

I feel a bit odd for having not seen them, given their iconic mega-blockbuster status. might have to check out FIRST BLOOD next time it's on.

You got that right. First blood was a good movie and had some decent acting on stallone's part. The rest were "trashion" movies, just trash with a lot of action.

First Blood was a very good film, showing that Stallone can act, as others have said. Rambo 2 was fun. Rambo 3 (vs the evil Russians) went into straight over the top 80s action fare, in the same vein as Arnie movies of that time. Fun, but nothing terribly deep or requiring much acting chops. Surprisingly, Rambo (the second last movie) was deeply satisfying and should have been the end of the run.

Unfortunately, there were always rumbles about another Rambo movie; I've been following the news fairly carefully as I've always enjoyed the movies. First it looked like another war actioner. Then there was talk of Rambo hunting an escaped black ops military hybrid animal (WTF guys). Then the story follows Rambo as he rescues the daughter of an old friend who has been kidnapped by a drug cartel. Not sure if this follows that plot.

Stallone's movies have been hit and miss in his last ten years or so. Rambo was unexpectedly good, although viscerally violent. Escape Plan was fun, as was The Expendables, but the sequels suffer from the usual sequel syndrome. Creed and Creed II were excellent.

There is also talk of a Rambo prequel with Stallone directing; I'd love to see this, especially if they could make it with the same kind of gritty feel as the original First Blood.

Apparently, Stallone and the author of First Blood developed an emotional journey story for Rambo V, but the studios rejected it in favour of the 'rescue kidnapped woman from drug cartel' plot.
