I have never seen Starship Troopers.  I first became aware of this flick in the theatre (don't remember what we were there to see), and my wife and I, both B-fans, both said 'nah, don't want to see that.'

However, I have read some comments about it on here.

Then, last night, a friend from another forum told me some about it, and got my interest up.

Any thoughts?  Will this movie be worth the price of rental?

Watch it!

Starship Troopers is a fantastic scifi flick with all of the Verhoren touches you would expect.  Gore, monsters, bad acting and all around fun.  Seriously, watch this film.  Fantastic stuff!

A bald man named Savalas visited me last night in a dream.  I think it was a Telly vision.

I hope you dont have a weak stomach..there is ALOT of gore in this movie! Thats why its so good!

Hell yeah, check it out! If you dig crazy sci-fi and/or Verhoven flicks, it'll be right up your alley. Plenty of gore to go along with the craziness too.

Starship Troopers is one of my favorites.  Buckets of gore and some of the best satirical humor since Dr. Strangelove.  (To be expected, considering Robocop was a Verhoeven/Numeier collaboration as well.)

FearlessFreep

"Starship Troopers" is pretty lousy.

The only good part is the special effects of the ships in space being blown up.

Everything else is inane

Worth a rental if your friend is paying

Going places unmapped, to do things unplanned, to people unsuspecting

Starship Troopers is ok. The effects are good, but the story is pretty basic. It kind of clobbers you over the head with it's message of how only "citizens" matter, along with some fairly tasteless fake public service announcements.

wickednick

Its ok. I say rent it, just so you can see it and get its viewing out of your way.
Sure its got blood and big bugs but the story sucks and I can't get past the whole faschism is good theme.

Smells like popcorn and shame

Flangepart

Well, i think Verhoven intended the Faschisim to be part of the satire, but it may not have come across as well he thought it did.
Gory as a war pic would be, for those who prefer gore.
But, man....did Logic ever take a vacation on THIS one!
Ask Andrew....these tactical geniuses deserve to be et!

The acting ranges from average to very bad, but the special effects are good and the action scenes are intense.  I bought it way back when it was first released on DVD.  It is definitely worth the price of a rental.

If anyone (in the US) isn't sure about Starship Troopers, just wait a couple weeks and it'll be on FX again.

I fail to see how the movie advocates fascism.  That's the book's department.  Saying Starship Troopers is pro-fascist is like saying Robocop is pro-corporate.

Kirk

I'd say pass,  especially if you have read the book.  Just too mindless for me.  If you need a giant bug fix, rent Them!.

Rent it if for no other reason than it is fairly frequently discussed/mentioned in this forum.  The "Facism Message" you're hearing about mostly amounts to the National Socialist chic of the uniforms (imagine Doogie Howser in the SS)... but if you watch closely the whole picture does seem to be a semi-retarded refutation of the anti-war movie "All's Quiet on the Western Front."

The action is okay if you can get past the fact that a human race that has mastered interstellar travel can't seem to perfect a more effective personal assault weapon against the aliens...  nor did they appear to have preserved the 20th century technology of armored vehicles.  Dialogue is cheesey, acting is worthy of the dialogue.  I would have liked it better if it had been a little less polished with a little more to laugh at.  Lots of good gore.
