I am directing a version of Superman the musical, An absolutely horrible musical that was written in the mid- sixties. The play contains a sixties educational style film about superman that i am assembling from mostly stock footage of my favorite fifties and sixties b-movies. Here is my problem, I need a shot of a planet exploding. My favorite is actually from amazon women on the moon, but there are actors in the way. Can anyone point me in the direction of a really bad exploding planet. The cheesier the better. Thanks

Deej

was there ever a movie made of Restaurant At The End Of The Universe? That should contain a planet exploding. Possibly in BBC's Hitchhiker's Guide...?

Everyone has potentially fatal flaws, but yours involve a love of soldiers' wives, an insatiable thirst for whiskey, and the seven weak points in your left ventricle.

Well, parts of what  made it into "Restaurant." came from the TV show, at least,, like the Restaurant itslef, and the Golgafrinchians

i don't believe there was actually an exploding planet shot in the bbc production. I'm thinking maybe something older. Did Ed Wood ever blow up mars or anything?

Ash

You could always use the scene of the Death Star exploding!
Hehe!

superjef

yeah- the death star is my safety, but it looks WAY too cool. I was wodering if anyone knew of any footage that looks like someone stuck an M-80 in a Styrofoam ball.

Ash

I don't know of any cheap scenes like the one you described but there is a neat scene in the beginning of Star Trek 6 The Undiscovered Country.

It's the scene where the Klingon moon Praxis explodes.

JohnL

Lots of planets get blown up in Lexx, both the movies and the series.

Flangepart

Humm....why not blow one up your self!
M-80, cheap globe filled with spray foam insulation for mass....and B&W film stock, if ya can find it. Just use a long fuse, and a fast speed camers if ya can find one.
Ohter then that....Hummm.....

Did they ever show the planet blowing up in This Island Earth?

Try "The Tenth Planet" - William Hartnell's last episode of Doctor Who before he regenerated into Patrick Troughton.  At the end, they blow up the Cybermen's planet of Mondas.  Which basically means they lit a ball of polystyrene on fire.  It didn't explode, it just smoldered and dripped.  And the drips of burning plastic fell down, and the smoke went up.  In space.  Yep.

Anyone remember SciFi's short film series Exposure? I seem to recall that there was one with people at a UFO convention and they started fooling around with some device left by aliens and they end up blowing up the world.

can u just use the footage from superman? i can't really remember it now but i think it could work.  Other than that, all my planet exploding knowledge is pretty run of the mill.
