I can't recall the title, but it had the word mickeys in it, which turns out to be a rocky atoll...

It starts out with a fishing boat finding a cargo ship adrift with damage to the hull.
It appears to be abandoned, so one of them goes on board to look for salvage, but finds the first officer still on board, filthy from digging around in the boiler room's coal.
The weather gets rough, & the fishing boat has to pull away, so the fisherman agrees to stay & help the first officer beach the ship on the "mickeys".

Once back in society, the officer tries to clear his name in a maritime court, where it's learned that all of the crew escaped the ship & are accounted for except the captain, whom we later find out was murdered either by the first officer or the third officer & buried in on of the coal hoppers.

It turns out the ship was supposed to be full of airplane parts, and with the help of the fisherman, the first officer sets out to prove that the parts were illegally offloaded & sold at a previous port, & that the company, with the help of the third officer, planned to scuttle the ship for the insurance money.

At some point, it's announced that the ship has been found, & the crooked third officer is sent back to finish the job, so the 1st officer & fisherman sneak back onto the ship by scuba diving through the hole in the hull, & find that the cargo boxes are full of rocks. The crooked 3rd officer spots them as they try to leave and tries to spear them to death, but they turn the tables on him, but I don't recall how...

I'd like to say the protagonist is Robert Mitchum, but I can't find this anywhere on his IMDB page...

The movie I saw was in color, & didn't have to do with drugs or anyone going crazy, just a guy trying to clear his name of losing his ship.

Ah!  It's THE WRECK OF THE MARY DEARE (1959) starring GARY COOPER CHARLTON HESTON ...?

The plot sounds about right! So does the trailer!
I couldn't find that alternate title, but I did find a reference to Les Minquiers, AKA The Minkies...
Karma!
