I know there are some people that were upset this was even made, and other people that were upset with Will Smith getting the Robin Williams role, but I just finished watching this movie and it's actually pretty good.

There are some differences between the two versions of the movie, but it follows the same story and has all the same basic beats to it, and most of the same songs.

Still, it's got a very different feel to it.  It doesn't have the same manic energy true, and in some parts it does feel a bit lack luster.  However the visuals are great.  It's a very beautiful movie.

They've also expanded on Jasmine's role and gave Jafar more backstory.

Also, to alleviate some people's fears, Will Smith is a pretty good Genie.  There's a few times it seems obvious he's trying to copy Robin.  For the most part he's at his best when he's doing his own thing.

I agree about it looking great. I thought much of the acting though was a bit underdone, especially from the guy playing the Sultan. I didn't feel the movie was under Robin William's shadow or anything but for me it just needed a bit more omph. Glad others enjoyed it more than me though.

As I thought, there will be a sequel, or, at least they are working on a sequel, which may be influenced by the straight-to-dvd animated sequels of the animated version. What I did not know, there is also talk of doing a prequel to the film, that will concentrate on plural genies. You can't have a film that makes more than $1B at the international boxoffice and not have a sequel or prequel.
