I would argue the presidents job isn't to be a leader. it's to assure quality of life for the citizens.

the govt is logically below the people. you could have a country with a government, you couldn't have a government without a country

I don't disagree, it's a question of definition. The president tries to assure quality of life for the citizens through leadership.

I don't understand what leadership is. Like standing there and professing and so forth?

lead·er·ship
/ˈlēdərˌSHip/
noun

the action of leading a group of people or an organization; the state or position of being a leader.

CEOs, heads of state, etc. are leaders. What they do is leadership. There are many different styles of leadership, some which I like, some which I don't.

totally over my head.

I liked Ronald reagan and Barak Obama I dont see how they could "lead" me in any way. they were people who made decisions and said stuff. ultimately, they were the bosses in DC, a place I don't associate with.

they're behind the scenes. elon Musk and Rihanna are our leaders

I'm less political than many people on here, but to be honest, lester, over the last decade I have come to see that ordinary people are the source of power in the United States because twice now, 2008 and 2016, we've seen Presidents elected who were not the establishment's choice, but they were that of enough people to step forward, vote, and make a difference, for good or for ill.

I don't follow Musk or Rhianna, but I get your meaning. I'd prefer a president who did his job and stayed behind the scenes and didn't try to make himself a celebrity.

Bush sr was like that, at least until Iraq

but logically speaking, the president is the president, they preside, over the executive branch of govt ,not that people who are being governed.

was just thinking, in old movies sometimes when they show police there will be a painting of lincoln on the wall behind them. His image, as a prop, connotes justice/ authority/ etc

I admire Lincoln and wouldn't agree with anyone who said he was a bad man, but a case can be made that of all our Presidents he came closest in certain ways to behaving as a dictator, however benevolent and unselfish those dictatorial actions were.

I think he did what he felt he needed to do to preserve the union by any means possible.  What a wretched horrific task to face!  He sacrificed his life for his cause.  Integrity is a rare quality.
